UI STATS AMBROS SIBOLD, OF STETTEN', BADEN, GERMANY.
ARMOR-WAISTCOAT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 26, 1910- Applcation filed May 20, 1997. Serial No. 374,714.
To all whom it may concern:
v Be it known that I, AMBRos SrBoLD, surveyor of the customs, a subject of the Grand Duke of Baden, residing at Stetten b. Lrrach, Baden, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Armor-Waistcoats, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in armor waistcoats.
According to the invention several layers of sheet metal laid over each other are provided with layers of wadding or the like and covered with a lining the whole being finally covered with the material of which the waistcoat proper is made. The waistcoat may be armored on both the front and back portions if desired but generally the armor will be provided on the breast portion only.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the armor-waistcoat and Fig. 2 a section through the breast portion of the same.
The improved armor waistcoat consists of the breast-portion a with the back-part b and neck c closed at the side, so that the breast portion can be made in one piece. 'Ihe breast portion consists of several layers of material laid over each other. On the lining h of the breast portion is placed lirst a layer of wadding d, then a layer of linen g then a cop'er" plate e which is covea on both Sidsith linen. Then follows an aluminium plate fon which lies a layer of cotton or wadding d, which is finally covered with the waistcoat'material proper.
Owing to the layers of wedding or cotton and by covering the metallic layers with linen a loose reslstance is oiiered to the bullet, similar to a blowing flag, which as is known, is very diicult to perforate with shot. The armor-waist-coat will thus oler a considerable resistance to projectiles, particularly those from short barreled guns, and
the momentum is entirely overcome when.'
the projectile has penetrated the layers.
I am aware that it has been proposed to provide a shield for military purposes composed of two layers of metal laid over each other. I am also aware that it has been proposed to provide a shield or breast-plate made of aluminium or other light material havin an inner lining of a flexible resistant material, and I do not claim this as my invention.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed,`I declare that what I claim is:
An improved armor-waist-coat adapted to fasteirat the side comprising a breast-portion, a back and a neck piece in which on the lining of the breast-portion is placed a layer of wadding, then a layer of linen, then a copper plate covered on both sides with linen, then an aluminium plate on which is placed a layer of wadding or cotton, which is finally covered with the waist-coat material proper, substantially as described.
In testimony whereotl I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
AMBROS SIBOLD.
