To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILLIP R. PARMLEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Dawson, in the county of Colfax and Territory of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package- I-Iolders, of which the following is a specifi cation.
The present invention relates to a device for tying letters without the use of a string and has for its purpose to provide a device of that character which shall be of such simple structure and cheap of manufacture as to appropriately adapt the same to be used for holding letters and the like in packages, and thereby eliminate the employment of strings for that purpose as now used by the Government in the railway mail service and generally throughout the Post Ofiice Department.
The invention is designed with especial reference to the recent call from the postal authorities and is intended to fulfill. all the requirements for tying the mail and other matter into packages convenient for handling. And it is further intended that the device shall fully comply with all the re quirements specified.
\Vith these objects in view the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in its preferred form of construction. The details of the structure thereof are fully described in the following specification, and the points of novelty set forth in the appended claims.
In the annexed drawing: Figure lisa perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4: is a bottom plan view taken on the line 4-4, of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in further detail and with like letters of reference indicating corresponding parts in the different views shown, the character A indicates a base or bottom plate to the under side of which is securely bolted or otherwise fixed a cross-bar B. The opposite ends of said bar are upturned at right angles to said cross piece and provide a pair of engaging members or adjusting elements for the device which are designated C. Cooperating with said base plate A is another plate D of substantially Specification of Letters Patent.

the same design and dimensions, and which is rigidly fixed to a vertically disposed plunger bar E. The bar E is in turn supported by a cross-bar F for which purpose it is suitably apertured. The opposite ends of the bar F are disposed downwardly or at right angles to the cross member and lie to the outer sides of the complementary members C. In this relation the members G and C are adjustably connected through the medium of a pair of set screws I-I. Said set screws are secured to the members C and project through slots I formed in the outer members G.
In order to bring the plate D into clamping relation with the plate A the plunger rod E is provided with a ratchet J, which ratchet is adapted to be engaged by a leaf spring K.
The leaf spring is rigidly secured to the under side of the cross bar F, and is provided with a projecting piece L whereby the spring may be released from the ratchet of the plunger bar as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The upper end of the plunger bar E is provided with a set screw M. Interposed between said set screw and the bar F is a spiral spring N whose function is to return the plate D to its upper position in order that letters may be interposed between said plates A and D in a manner that will be obvious. The set screw M is also serviceable in that it may be used to tension the spring N.
To accommodate this device to hold letters in different size packages it is necessary to simply adjust the same through the medium of the two side set screws.
What I claim as new is 1. A device for holding packages comprising, a bar having a plate fixed thereon, a sec- 0nd bar adj ustably mounted on the first bar,
a plunger rod provided with a plate movably mounted on said second bar and adapted to be adjusted relatively to said fixed plate, a spring carried by the second bar and adapted to engage with the plunger rod of said movable plate and hold the same in adjusted position, said. spring having means to effect the release of said movable plate from adjusted position, and a means carried by the plunger rod for retracting the movable plate when the same is released.
