LIFTER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Eri-Inn B. Torr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at lvlemphis, in the county of Shelby and State of rIennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lifter-s, of which the following' is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in lifters, and its primary object is to provide a device of this character by means of which a curtain pole can be readily and quickly applied to and removed from its supports.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a lifter wherein the head is constructed of a single length of wire.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a lifter which is simple, durable and e'thcient, and which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
ll'vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing,wherein Figure l is a perspective view of a lifter constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the head of the lifter, and Fig. is a plan view illustrating the first step in the process of the construction of the head of a lifter of a single length of wire.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, l designates the pole and 2 the head of a lifter constructed in accordance with my invention. The pole may be constructed of wood, metal or any other suitable material and may be of any desired length.
The head 2 comprises a bar 3, and a stud 4 which projects from the bar at a point centrally between its ends and which provides means by which the head is secured to the pole l. The head 2 also comprises pairs of arms 5 which are secured at the ends of the bar 3. The arms of each pair are relatively spaced and diverge to provide holders (S for the reception of a curtain pole. One arm 5 of each holder G is preferably longer than the other arm thereof, and the arms of each holder are arranged in parallel but oset planes. In view of the construction of each holder, it should be apparent that the curtain pole may be supported Specification of Letters Patent.

In practice the curtains are secured to the po-le in the usual manner, that is to Say, through he medium of rings and pins. After the curtain has been secured to the pole, the pole is inserted in the holders G of the lifter in a manner to position a ring between the arms of each holder, that is to say, theA pole should be applied to the holders 6 in such a manner that the arms of each holder will be disposed on opposite sides of a ring. This application of the pole is permitted owing to the arrangement of the arms of each holder 6 in parallel but offset planes. As the arms of each holder 6 are disposed on opposite sides of a ring, the rings cannot shift on the pole during the application of the pole to or its removal from the supports, thereby preventing all liability of the poles tilting on and falling olf of the lifter, and rendering the application of al pole to or its removal from the supports comparatively easy. As one of the arms 5 of each holder G is longer than the other, those portions of the longer arm extending above the upper ends of the shorter arms may be used to guide the holders on to a pole when it is desired to remove the pole from its supports. Said portions of the longer arm may also be used to adjust the rings upon the pole.
The head 2 of the lifter is preferably constructed of a single length of wire. In forming the head, the wire is extended in one direction from two points equally spaced from the transverse center thereof to provide the strands 7 and 8, after which the wire is extended in the reverse direction to provide the strands 9 which project in opposite directions from the strand 7. After the strands 9 are formed, the wire is extended in the direction of the strand 7 to provide the strands 10, then in the direction of the transverse center of the strand 7 to provide the strands 1l and thence laterally from the 'strands 7 to provide the strands 12. The strands 7 and l1 are intertwisted to provide the bar 3 and the strands 12 are intertwisted to provide the stud 4 of the head of the lifter. The strands 8 and 9 are intertwisted and formed to provide the holders 6 of the head of the lifter.
It should be apparent from the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, that I provide a lifter by means of which a curtain pole may displacebe readily and quickly applied to and re" moved from its supports, that the holder is simple, durable and el'licient, and that it can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
Changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be made Within the scope of the claim Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having fully described and illustrated my invention, what l claim is:
A lifter comprising a pole7 a horizontal bar, a stud formed on and depending from the horizontal bar at a point centrally hetWeen the ends of the loar, and a holder at each end of the horizontal bar, each holder consisting of diverging arms disposed in parallel offset planes, one arm of each holder being longer than the other arm thereof, the offsetting of the arms of each holder permitting` the arms of each holder to be positioned on opposite sides of a ring to prevent the shifting of the rings on the pole during the application of the pole to or the removal of the pole romits supports, the diverging of the arms and the forming of one arm of each holder longer than the other arm thereof facilitating the application of a pole to the holders and permitting one arm oi' each holder to be used for adjusting the rings on the pole.
