SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed October 23, 1909. Serial No. 524,280.
V is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This 1nvent1on relates to improvements in sewing machine attachments and has particular reference to means for gripping and holding the fabric in proper relation to the needle while the fabric is being fed to and beneath the needle by the usual feeding instrumentalities.
In the accompanying drawings forming part hereof a convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated, and the character istic features of the invention, together with the details in the construction and arrangement of parts will be apparent from the description hereinafter contained when read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the attachment as applied to the machine, only such portions of the latter being shown as is necessary to disclose the relative arrangement of the parts, Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the attachment removed'from the machine, and Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sectional views through the gripper.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference characters dos-- ignate corresponding elements in the several views, A represents the lower member or jaw of a cloth gripper, the same being elongated and fiat, as shown, having a box-like shank B comprising parallel bent-up edge flanges spaced apart to provide an opening C in which is introduced the complementary gripping jaw or member I) pivoted at E to the forward ends of the parallel side flanges, the shank of the gripping ja-w D" fbeing bent upwardly andthe jaws being normally held in closed position by a spring F, one end of Which engages the shank of each of the jaws and the coiled portion of Specification of Letters Patent.

which is sleeved upon the pivot connecting the same. The bottom of the box-like por-' tion of the lower gripping jaw is extended rearwardly and bent upward as at G to constitute a finger hold adapted to be engaged when the jaws are opened against the pres-' sure of the spring.
The gripper just defined. is carried by a pair of parallel guide rods H secured to the inner flange of the box-like portion B by" being passed through apertures therein and soldered thereto. The opposite ends of the guide rods are secured together by a connecting piece I. The guide rods slide freely through apertured flanges J, turned upwardly from the edges of a fiat base K provided with an aperture for the accommodation of a binding screw L adapted to screw into an aperture provided therefor in the base of the machine beneath the arm of the machine and inside the needle bar, as will be readily understood.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many changes may be made in the details and construction of parts without de' parting from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is: I
In an attachment of the character described, elongated flat gripping jaws one of which is formed with a box-like shank pro viding a. space for the reception of the other jawa pivot engaging the walls of the boxlike portion and the aw seated therein, and means for retaining the jaws in closed position, each jaw having an extension constituting a linger hold for engagement when the jaws are to be opened, in combination with guiding means engaging said box-like portion and arranged at right angles thereto,-and means for holding the guiding means in place, substantially as described;
