2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
ALBERT BIRD, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
LUNCH-BOX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT Brno, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lunch-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to collapsible lunch boxes, and the objects of the invention are to provide a lunch box that can be reduced in its dimensions to form a small parcel that can be easily carried in the pocket of the coat, and to furnish a lunch box with simple and effective means that will permit of it being easily and quickly collapsed or restored to a set-up position.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a sanitary lunch box, and to accomplish the above results by a box that is simple and durable.
\Vith these and such other objects in view as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings forming a part of this specification wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective View of the lunch box. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the box collapsed. Fig. 4i is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional View of the collapsed box, and Fig. 6 is a plan of the box partly collapsed.
My improved lunch box is preferably constructed of metal and leather, the metal being in the form of skeleton frames pivotally connected together and strap hinges for retaining the pivoted frames together, while the leather used is of a light and flexible character in order that it can be easily folded. The bottom of the box is formed by two U-shaped metallic frames 1 having the side arms 2 thereof pivotally connected together, as at 3. Sultably secured to the frames 1 are the lower edges of side walls 4 and end walls 5. These walls are preferably made of one piece of material having Specification of Letters Patent.

the ends thereof connected, as at 6. The lower edges of the walls are wrapped around the frames 1 and are sewed to the walls, as at 7 the same sewing retaining the bottom 8 between the side walls. The lower edges of the side walls are cut away, as at 9, to provide clearance for the pivoted ends of the side arms 2. The upper edges of the side walls 4 and 5 are bent over two frames 10 similar to the frames 1, said frames having the arms 11 thereof pivotally connected, as at 12. The upper edges of the side walls are sewed, as at 13, similar to the lower edges thereof, and the side walls 4 are cut away, as at 14:, to provide clearance for the pivoted ends of the arms 11. Pivotally connected to the side arms 2 and 11, as at 15, are links 16 having their ends connected, as at 17.
The lid or cover of the box is formed of two U-shaped wire frames 18 having the ends thereof terminating at oppositely disposed cut away portions 19 of a cover 20 mounted upon said frames, the cover having the edges thereof extending under the frames and sewed, as at 21. One of the frames 18 is connected to one of the end walls 5 by a strap hinge 22, said hinge being riveted to the wall 5, as at 23, and to the cover 20, as at 24;. The opposite end of the cover is provided with a pivoted link 25 adapted to be held by a pivoted clasp 26, carried by the inner side of the wall 5 and extending through an eyelet 27 provided therefor in the wall 5. This clasp is of a conventional form such as used upon large over-shoes.
With the lunch box empty and without removing the cover 20, the box can be collapsed and folded somewhat similar to a pocket-book. The pivoted connection 17 of the link 16 is broken to throw the links out of alinement, and then the frames 10 can be lowered upon the frames 1 with the links folded as shown in Fig. 6. The ends of the frames 1 and 10 can then be swung upwardly, as shown in Fig. 5, thereby folding the box into a comparatively small parcel.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
A collapsible lunch box comprising a body portion and a cover, said body portion including an upper and a lower pair of U- shaped frames, the frames of each pair pivotally connected at their inner ends, flexible side and end walls having their upper portions overlapping the upper pair of frames posing ends, means for pivotally connecting and secured together and having their lower the upper ends to the upper frames, means portions overlapping the lower pair of for pivotally connecting the lower ends of frames and secured together, said side walls the links to said lower frames, and a cover 15 at their top and bottom cut away to prohinged to the body portion.
