To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERIC J. PFISTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Headlights, of which the following is a specification.

The objects of the invention are, generally, the provision in a merchantable form, a device of the class above mentioned which shall be inexpensive to manufacture, facile in operation and devoid of complicated parts; specifically the provision of clips of novel and improved construction, adapted to be mounted upon the side walls of a headlight; the provision of a sign provided with elements adapted to be engaged by said clips; other and further objects being made manifest hereinafter as the description of the invention progresses.

The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, delineated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in that portion of this instrument wherein patentable novelty is claimed for certain distinctive and peculiar features of the device, it being understood, that, within the scope of what hereinafter thus is claimed, divers changes in the form, proportions, size, and minor details of the structure, may be made, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to denote corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows my invention in vertical transverse section looking toward the front of the headlight; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, parts being broken away; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the clips; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective designed to show the cooperation between the sign and the clip, parts being broken away.

The improved device forming the subject matter of this application for Letters Patent is adapted to be mounted in headlights,

signal lanterns and the like, to retain therein, a sign carrying upon its face a distinguishing characteristic.

The supporting member in which my device is mounted may be a lantern or headlight of any form. In the accompanying drawings, I have shown a lantern and denoted the same by the numeral 1. The lantern is shown merely to illustrate one form of the device with which my invention may be assembled, and a detailed description of the lantern is not necessary, it being understood that the lantern may be of any form, and that my invention may be assembled therewith in any manner dictated by the exigencies of the proposed use.

The invention comprises a pair of clips which are denoted by the numeral 2 in the several figures of the drawings. These clips are adapted to be oppositely disposed upon the side walls 3 of the lantern, with which they may be assembled in any suitable manner, screws l passing through the side walls 3 of the lantern to engage the clips 2, forming the attaching means in the present instance. The adjacent faces 5 of these clips 2 are provided with grooves 6. These superficial grooves 6 terminate anteriorly with-- in the contour of the clips and at their upper extremities, the said grooves are forwardly extended to intersect the edges 7 of the clips. Since these clips 2 are identical in construction a detailed description of one of them will answer for both.

It will be seen by an examination of Figs. 3 and 4: that a portion 8 of the edge 7 of the clip is left intact to define the lower portion of the groove, the upper extremity of this portion 8 being provided with a lip 11 arranged to extend into the groove 6 intermediate the ends thereof, to overhang the lower portion of the groove. The upper portion of the rear face of the part 8 which defines the forward face of the groove 6 is rearwardly inclined as denoted by the numeral 9, the lower portion of the rear face of the member 8 being disposed in upright relation as denoted by the numeral 20 in Fig. 3. The bottom of the groove 6 is upwardly inclined toward the edge 7 of the device as denoted by the numeral 10. The

rear wall 12 of the groove is reversely curved to diminish the groove at its lower end, the said reversely curved portion terminating ultimately at its lower end, in a straight, upright portion 14, disposed parallel to the portion 20 of the forward face of the groove.

The display element which it is the func tion of the clip to hold, may include a sign 15, preferably fashioned from thin metal and carrying stenciled characters. This sign 15 is terminally provided with elements adapted to be inserted into the clips 2 to be retained in the grooves 6 therein, and these elements in the present instance are shown in the form of the terminal parts of a rod 16 which is rigidly assembled in any suitable manner, with the upper edge of the sign 15. The ends of the rod 16 are adapted to fit somewhat closely between the portions 14 and 20 of the groove, the lower edge of the rod 16 being beveled as denoted by the nu meral 17, to conform to the upward inclination of the bottom 10 of the groove. upper portions of the forward faces of the rod 16, adjacent the ends thereof, are cut away as denoted by the numeral 18, to conform to the rearward inclination 9 of the forward face of the groove, and the width of the rod 16 is such that, as shown in Fig. 3, when the rod is mounted in place in the clip, a slight space 19 will intervene between the upper edge of the rod and the lower face of the overhanging lip 11, beneath which the rod is positioned when the device is assem bled.

In practical operation, the extremities of the rod 16 are introduced into the portions of the groove 6 which intersect the edges 7 of the clips 2. The rod 16 is then pushed rearward, resting upon the lips 11, to the rear of which the extremities of the rod 16 will drop. The extremities of the rod will then traverse the reversely curved rear walls 12 of the groove, and ultimately enter the space between the portions la and 20 of the groove, the beveled portion 17 of the rod resting upon the upwardly inclined portion 10 of the groove, the cut-away portion 18 of the forward faces of the ends of the rod bearing against the rearwardly inclined portion 9 of the front wall of the groove. The peculiar configuration given to the groove in those portions thereof which lie beneath the lip 11, tend to hold the rod 16 firmly in place within the clips 2, and to prevent the sign 15 from swinging or altering its position.

By inclining the sign 15 or the rod 16, the sign may readily be removed from the clips 2, the space 19 permitting the extremities of the rod to be raised slightly, so that the same may be tilted back for removal from the clips in which it is mounted.

Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the class described, a clip provided in its face with a superficial groove terminating anteriorly within the contour of the clip and having its upper extremity intersecting the edge of the clip, the clip being provided with a lip to extend into the groove intermediate the ends thereof.

2. In a device of the class described, a clip provided in its face with a superficial groove terminating anteriorly within the contour of the clip and at its upper extremity intersecting the edge of the clip,the forward wall of the groove being rearwardly inclined, the clip being provided with a lip to extend into the groove intermediate the ends thereof.

3. In a device of the class described, a clip provided in its face with a superficial groove terminating anteriorly within the contour of the clip in upright, parallel faces, and at its upper extremity intersecting the edge of the clip, the clip being provided with a lip to extend into the groove intermediate the ends thereof.

In a device of the class described, a clip provided in its face with a superficial groove terminating anteriorly within the contour of the clip in upright, parallel faces, and at its upper extremity intersecting the edge of the clip, the bottom of the groove being upwardly inclined, the forward face of the groove being rearwardly inclined in its upper portion, the rear wall of the groove being reversely curved to diminish the groove adjacent its lower end, the clip being provided with a lip to extend into the groove intermediate the ends thereof.

6.
