To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EMIL STANECKY and LEA H. STANECKY, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, county oit' Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindows, of which the following is a specitication.
Our invention relates to improvements in windows and especially to that class ot windows having vertically slidable sashes which are also adapted to be swung' inwardly for cleaning or other purposes.
The object of our invention is to provide such a windon7 which shall be simple in con struction and efficient in operation.
Our invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Our invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drmvings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The window-frame l may be of any usual or desired construction. At one side ot said :trame and secured at top and bottom thereto, are two cylindrical guide rods 2 and 2 preferably having intermediate stiitfening supports 3 secured in the side of the t' ame. As shown, the guide rod 9 is set nearer the center of the frame than rod 2. Lower and upper sashes 4L and ll respectively are grooved at their outer corners to receive rods 2 and 2 and hinge members 5 are secured to said sashes and partially embrace said guide rods, so as to render the sashes free to slide on said rods and to be swung inwardly thereon. The hinge members 5 are le ft open at 6 so as to pass the supports 3 when the sashes are in closed position.
Spring drums 7 and 8 are mounted in housings 9 and 10 respectively secured in suitable openings in the upper portion et the window-frame. Each of said drums is rovided with a cent 'al annular groove in which ilexible bands ll and l2 are adapted to be wrapped. At their lower edges bands ll and l2 carry fastening clips 13 and 11i provided with securing notches l5 and lt adapted to take over buttons 17 and 1S secured to the ends oit sashes et and et. At each end the drums 7 and 8 are provided with chambers containing spiral springs 19 secured at their outer ends to pins 19 carried by said drums and at their inner ends to shafts 7 upon which said drums are mounted. By this arrangement it will be seen that the springs lf) will tend to wrap the bands ll and l2 upon said drums and thus tend to support said sashes to balance the same. In the sides of said sashes t and 4L are provided chan'ibers Q() containing bars 21 normally held apart by means ot springs 22 and carrying latching rollers 23 at their outer ends. Bars 2l. carry tinger pieces 2l projecting through slots 25 and a :tace plate 2G secured over the inside ot chamber 2.0. The end o't chamber 20 is partially closed by an end plate 27, there being however portions ot' said chamber lclt uncovered at either end of plate 27 for the protrusion of latching rollers 23, as shown. rlhe ends QS of plate 27 are beveled as shown and the ends 2t) ot' chamber Q0 are curved as shown to cause outward and inward movements of latching rollers Q3 upon longitudinal movements ot' bars 2l. Longitudinal groves 30 are provided in the side of frame l to receive rollers 23 and guide the same during raising or lowering of the sashes. By this arrangement it will be seen that by compressinglinger pieces 2st. between the lingers the rollers Q3 may be drawn into ehamber 2O to premit swinging of said sashes and that upon releasing ot said finger pieces the rollers 23 will protrude from the ends of said sashes to engage grooves 30 to latch the windows in closed position and permit raisi ing and lowering o't the same. lVhen it is desired to swing both of the sashes inwardly at the same time the lower sash is raised and the upper sash lowered when this may be done as indicated in Fig. l. By placing the guide rod 2 nearer the center than guide rod 2 the upper sash is permitted to swing fully open without interference from guide rod 2. By placing the guide rods 2 and 2 in grooves in the inner corners of the sashes the adjacent ends ot' said sashes are caused to swing closely adjacent to the side oi the frame when the sashes are closed. A hinged molding 3l may be placed on the outer portion of the window-sill to close the crack between the lower sash and said sill, and may be swung back out of the way when it is desired to lower the upper sash.
Vhile we have illustrated and described the preferred construction for carrying our invention into effect7 this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of our invention. Ve, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the eXact details of construction set forth, but wish to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. rlhe combination with a window frame, of a sash having a vertically slidable and hinged mounting in said frame; oppositely disposed bars slidably mounted in said sash in the side opposite to said mounting; springs for holding said bars apart; guide rollers on the ends of said bars; guiding surfaces on said sashes adapted to project or withdraw said rollers upon longitudinal movements of said bars7 there being grooves in said frame adapted to accommodate said rollers; and finger pieces on said bars for drawing the same together, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a window frame, of a sash having a vertically slidable and hinged mounting in said frame; and provided with an elongated recess in the edge opposite to said hinge mounting; a cover plate closing' said recess except at the ends where openings are left; oppositely disposed bars slidably mounted in said recess; springs for holding said bars apart; guide rollers on the ends of said bars; guiding surfaces at the ends of said recess and cover plate adapted to project or withdrawsaid rollers upon longitudinal movements of said bars, there being grooves in said frame adapted to accommodate said rollers; and linger pieces on said bars for drawing the same together, substantially as described.
