JOHN G. EGLY, or IPI-IILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
KNITTING-MACHINE NEEDLE.
Application filed May 5, 1909/ Serial No. 493,997.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. EGLY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Knitting-hulachine Needle, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful knitting machine needle having an integral off-set embracing the butt.
It further consists of other novel details of construction all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
I have devised a novel construction of needle wherein I dispense with the brass sleeve or spacing device mounted on the butt of the needle and in lieu thereof form an in tegral spacing device surrounding or embracing the butt, since I extend the needle butt downwardly, laterally and then upwardly around the said needle butt. I may further provide a slight off-set at a desired point, to accomplish the necessary function.
In the drawings, I have shown a construc: tion which operates successfully, butit will be evident that the arrangement may be varied and other instrumentalities may be employed which will come within the scope of my invention and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction as herein shown and described, but desire to make such changes as may be necessary.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a needle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation showingaslightly different form from that shown in the other figures. Fig. 4 represents an end elevation thereof. Fig. 5 represents a portion of the needle with the off-set. Fig. 6 represents an end elevation thereof. Fig. 7 represents an end elevation of a plurality of needles embodying my invention in assembled position illustrating the function attained by my novel device.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings: 1 designates my novel construction of a needle, the same comprising the body portion or shank 2 at the upper portion of which is located the latch 3 and the hook 4t of the usual construction.
5 designates the butt of the'needle, the lat- Specification of Letters Patent.

ter having depending therefrom, the extension 6 which is substantially in line with the body, or shank 2 and is continued laterally at 7 and upwardly at 8, is continued laterally at 9, over the upper edge of the butt and downwardly at 10, embracing the opposite side of the butt from that embraced by the upward extension 8. From this it will be seen that I provide an integral spacing device which embraces or surrounds the butt serving to strengthen the same and also to accomplish the result of the brass sleeve or spacing device heretofore used.
In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 I have continued the downward extension 10 laterally at 11 beneath the lower edge of the butt so that the same is entirely surrounded, the advantages of which are evident. It will be noted in these figures that the upward extension 8 is slightly deflected as best seen in Figs. 2 and 4, from the line of the body portion in order to properly pass around the butt. In the construction shown in Figs. 5, 6' and 7, I have provided the upwardly extending portion 8 with the off-set 12, the efiect of which is the same as shown and described in the previous figures. It will thus be apparent that by the employment ofmy novel device the needles are spaced from each other to the desired extent and at the same time the needles are per- 'mitted to be somewhat closer together than in the ordinary constructions, whereby a greater number of needles can be employed and much finer work can be done, as will be evident to those skilled in the art.
It will be evident that the upwardly extending portion 8 can be deflected to either the right or to the left of the butt or may be made in any desired manner to accomplish the necessary function.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a knitting needle having a butt, a portion of said needle being deflected downwardly and upwardly, embracing one side of said butt and downwardly to embrace the opposite side.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a knitting needle having a butt, a portion of said needle being deflected downwardly and upwardly out of line with the body of said needle, said upwardly extending portion being bent over said butt and downwardly and upwardly, over and downwardly upon upon the opposite side of said butt and the the opposite side of said butt and an off-set end of said downwardly extending portion formed in said upwardly extending portion.
being inturned beneath said butt. JOHN C. EGLY.
8. As an improved article of manufacture, Vitnesses:

of said needle being deflected downwardly C. D. MoVAY.
