a citizen of the United States, residing at Bennington, in the cou nt'y of Bennington and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knitting-Machine Needles, of which the following is a I specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a needle of the class hereinbefore referred to which may be easily. and cheaply manufactured and in which the-stockfrom which the needle is made is not subjected to any abru t bends, but when the needle is completed the butt will be of the same diameter throu hout lized by the process of manufacture.

The object of the invention'is, further, to

provide a needle having a butt so formed and constructed as to lock the needle securely in the jack in the manner hereinbefore set forth without necessitating extreme accuracy in the length ofthe needle-butt as compared with the length of the slot in the needle-jack which is adapted to receive said butt.

The invention consists of a knitting-machine needle formed and constructed as set forth in the following specification and particularly as pointed out in the claims thereof.

The Invention further consists of 'a knittin -machine needle formed and constructed as ereinafter set forth and particularl as set forth in the claims, in combination with a j ack. provided with a slot formed to receive the curved butt of said needle.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved knittin -machine needle and jack, the same bein s own enlarged. Fig. 2 IS a section taken on inc 2 2, Fi 1. i Like numerals refer to like parts throughout both views of the drawings.

' In the drawings, 5 is the knitting-machine needle, and 6 the jack. 7 is the shank of said 7 tricks of a needle, and 8 the butt thereof, said butt ex tending transverselyof said. shank and bent to form a reverse curve consisting-of the curved portions 9 and 10. The curved portion 9 terminates at one end thereof in the shank 7 at the bottom of said shank. The jack 6 is provided with a slot 20, formed to receive said curved butt 8, said slot being shown in the drawings, Fig. 1, as slightly longer-than the butt for the purpose of illustration.

The backedge of the jack 6 is cut away at 11 the diameter of the shank 7, so that the rear ed e of the lower part of the jack and the rear e ge of the needle 7 are brought into alinement. In attaching the needle 7 to the jack 6 ordetaching the same therefrom said needle is moved laterall. with relation to the side faces 12 of said jac and it will be seen needle to said jack by moving the samein a 1 direction opposite tothat of said arrow, so

that said needle is firmly locked to the jack 6 when said arts are located in the grooves or linttting-machine.

It will be noted that the lower ed e of the slot 20 insaid jack projects upwar ly at its back end above the bottom of the butt Sand bears against the end and back.side"of the curved portion 9 of said butt, forming a support, for the shank, which greatly strengthens the needle at this point and tends to hold the shank 7 firmly pressed against the back edge of the jack 6.

The advantages derived from my im-' quent practical use; second, the needle is firmly locked to the j ac'k, as hereinbefore described; third, the curyed formation of-the butt forms, in effect, a s ring which erforms,

the function of holding t e shank of t e needle firml pressed against the butt of the jack 6; fourtthe length of the butt of the needle is not necessarily of exactly the same length as that of the slot 20 in the jack, so that extreme accuracyin the length of said butt or in the distance at which the end of said butt terminates from the shank 7 is eliminated.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire by Letters Patent to se cure,-is-

1. A knitting-machine needle, comprising in its construction a shank and a butt, said butt extending 'transversely of said shank and bent to form a reverse curve, said reverse curve terminating at one end thereof in said shank. e 2.- A knitting-machine needle, comprising in its construction a shankand a butt, said butt extending transversely of said shank and bent to form a reverse curve, said reverse curve terminating at the bottom of said shank, and a jack provided "with a slot,

formed to receive and fit said curved butt.
