REGULATING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL Gr. SPRADO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Regulating Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to governors and specifically to that type of governors known as astatic governors, one of the purposes of this invention being to provide a governor which will act as an astatic governor within certain limits while its action beyond those limits will correspond in a greater or less degree to the action of a static governor, or in other words, its action will be pseudo astatic.
The drawings illustrate a specific example of an astatic governor with a pseudo astatic overlift.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an extremely sensitive governor which will have a considerable range of movement for low speeds of the engine so that the throttle valve or its equivalent will always be under the complete control of the gov ernor, while for high speeds of the engine the action of the governor will approximate the action of an ordinary static governor, or, in other words, its action will be pseudo astatic so that the governor will be compelled to work against enough resistance to exert the required reaction effect.
The drawing represents a governor in sectional view, the section being central and vertical.
The governor shaft 2 is in any suitable manner, as by gears not shown, connected to and adapted to be rotated from the engine or other machine to be controlled. Secured to the shaft 2 by the pin 6 is the collar 7 resting upon the top of steadying sleeve supported by the frame not shown. Bracket arms 8, 9, extend outwardly from a central sleeve fixed to the reduced uppermost portion of the governor shaft 2 and the central sleeve is extended in enlarged form at the bottom into a ring fixed to a less reduced portion of the shaft 2.
From the outer extremity of each of the diametrically opposite bracket arms 8, 9, is secured by pivot 19 a support or suspension member 10 from which is supported a weight 12 by pivots 11. The suspension members 10 are bell-crank levers, are yoked to em- Speeification of Letters Patent.

brace the weights 12, and each has its lower and outer extremities pivotally connected to the upper bifurcated ends of a connecting rod 20, the bifurcation extending from crotch 21. It should be noted that the suspension mem ber 10 is so positioned when the governor is at rest and the connections are such, that the pivots 11 which are in line with the gravity center of weight 12, are in a vertical plane including pivot 19 so that there is a direct downward pull on the pivot 19 by the weight 12. Another noticeable feature is that the distance between the axes of pivots ll, 19 is less than that between the axis of pivot 19 and the axis of the pivotal connection between the suspension member 10 and the connecting rod 20. For a given motion of weight 12 this will cause a corresponding increased motion of rod 20.
The lower ends of connecting rods are pivotally secured to diametric points of col lar l4: slidable on the governor shaft 2. The collar 14; is provided with an encircling band 16 retained thereon between a shoulder 17 011 the collar and a ring 18 screw threaded on the collar which is freely rotatable within the band 16 to which the regulated device is c0nnected. The compression spring 13 is supported upon the collar 7 and the collar 14 has a counterbore 15 to receive the spring 13 and rests upon the upper end thereof.
Each of the weights 12 is provided with an outer radial recess 22 within which is seated a compression spring 23 hearing against the inner end of said recess at one end and at the other end against a nut 24: threaded on the end of a rod 25 extending centrally through the weights, the sleeve of the bracket arms 8, 9, and the reduced uppermost portion of shaft 2, this sleeve and re duced portion being vertically slotted for the passage therethrough of the rod 25. Each of the weights 12 is provided with an inner radial recess having a shoulder 27 against which abuts one end of a compression spring 26 surrounding rod 25, the other end of which spring abuts against the sleeve of the bracket arms 8 9, spanning the slot in the said sleeve.
The operation is as follows. When at rest the springs 26 are under greater compression than the springs 23 and facilitate outward movement of the weights under the action of centrifugal force when the governor is started and is maintained in action. The action being started, shaft 2 will be rotated and the spring 13 will assist the outward movement of the weights by counterbalancing the weight of sleeve 14 and connected parts. This permits a high initial rise of the band 16 for speed changes at low speeds. Later, at higher speed, the band 16 has a smaller corresponding lift for the same changes. In other words, the governor is astatic but has a pseudo astatic overlift.
It is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination in a governor, of a vertical shaft, bracket arms on said shaft, supports pivotally depending from said brackets, weights pivoted to said supports on a single axis passing through their gravity centers, spring means for forcing said Weights inwardly, a collar movable on said shaft, and connecting rods each of said rods pivotally connected to said collar and to said supports, the axis of said support pivots being at a greater distance from the axis of the pivotal connection of said support to said bracket arm than the axis of the connection of said weight to said support.
