GOVERNOR FOR GAS-ENGINES, 85o.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 29, 1908.
Patented Feb. 14, 1911.
Serial No. 429,839.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, Final) C. OLIN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Governors for Gas-Engines, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a governor which is more particularly designed for controlling the supply valve of a gas or other hydrocarbon engine according to the speed of the same but which may also be used for regulating the supply valve of an engine which is driven by another motive agent.
The object of this invention is to provide a governor for this purpose which is comparatively simple in construction, reliable in operation and easy of adjustment'; which is so constructed that it is sensitive when driven by a slow moving member, and which prevents sudden variations in the load upon the engine from producing an unduly quick change in the position of the supply valve of the same.
In the accompanying drawings consisting of 3 sheets: Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved governor. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary horizontal section of the same on line 2--2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view thereof. Figs. Il, 5 and G are vertical cross sections in the correspondingly numbered lines iu Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A represents a hollow driving shaft of a governor which may b-e operatively connected with any suitable rotating part of the engine which is to be regulated. As shown in Fig. l, this shaft is arranged horizontally and journaled in bearings a, c. rising from a base B, but if desired this shaft may be otherwise arranged to suit the particular construction of the engine to which it is applied.
C represents a valve rod which is arranged axially within the driving shaft and which is connected in any suitable manner With the` gas supply or other valve which controls the engine.
D represents a longitudinally movable shifting sleeve mounted on the periphery of the driving shaft and connected with the valve rod by a transverse pin Z passing through a longitudinal slot e in the driving shaft. By this means the Valve rod and shifting sleeve are compelled to turn with the driving shaft but are free to move lengthwise of the shaft independent thereof to an extent equal to the length of the slot c in the driving shaft.
F represents a supporting sleeve which turns with its central part on the shifting sleeve while its reduced front part turns upon the driving shaft in front of the shifting sleeve. This supporting sleeve is rotated about the driving shaft and in the same direction but at a higher speed by means of a driven pinion g mounted on the driving shaft in rear of the supporting sleeve and secured at the front end of its hub to the rear end of the supporting sleeve by set screws g1, an intermediate gear wheel 71, meshing with the driven pinion, an intermediate pinion z' connected with the iuter mediate gear wheel and journaled upon a stationary arbor I, and a driving gear wheel J secured to the driving shaft in rear of the driven pinion and meshing with the intermediate pinion. The arbor I may be supported in any suitable manner but preferably by the upper end of a bracket K which has two lower legs Z, Z engaging with sockets or recesses Z1, Z1 in the upper side of the base B while its central part is provided with an opening m which receives the hub of the driving gear wheel and is held in place thereon between the rear side of the driving gear wheel and a screw nut m1 applied to the rear end of its hub, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
0n opposite sides of its rear end the supporting sleeve is provided with late 'ally projecting arms N which are preferably formed integral therewith. On the outer end of each of these arms is pivoted an elbow-shaped governor lever having an inwardly projecting rear or inner arm o and a forwardly projecting front arm 01.
The inner arms of the elbow levers are operatively connected with the shifting sleeve D so that the latter and the valve rod are compelled to move with the inner arms in a direction lengthwise of the driving shaft but said arms and the parts connected therewith are free to rotate about the driving shaft, shifting sleeve and valve rod. The connection between the inner arms of the elbow levers and the shifting sleeve shown in the drawings consists of a ring P which `is provided on diametrically opposite sides with recesses p which receive the inner ends of the inner arms of the elbow levers. The bore of this ring engages with the periphery of a coupling sleeve Q mounted on the driving shaft while its front edge engages with the rear end of the shifting sleeve and its rear edge engages with a iiange g on the coupling sleeve, the front end of the coupling sleeve being connected by a screw joint with the rear end of the shifting sleeve. rlie coupling sleeve and its flange together with the shifting sleeve thus form an annular groove in which the ring P is free to turn independently of the coupling and shifting sleeves while, nevertheless, it is compelled. to move axially with the coupling and shifting sleeves.
R, R1 represent two governor weights which are arranged on diametrically opposite sides of the central part of the supporting sleeve and each of which is pivoted on the front end of the front arm of the elbow lever on the same side of the driving shaft. llfhen the governor is at rest the governor weights engage each other with their opposing inner sides for which purpose these weights are recessed or bifurcated on their inner sides so that each weight can straddle the supporting sleeve, as shown in Fig. 6. While the governor is in operation the weights move radially inward and outward relatively to the driving shaft and during this movement the weights are guided relatively to each other for keeping the same in alinement. rlfhe guide device for this purpose preferably consists of two guide rods 1, r of tubular form arranged parallel to each other on opposite sides of the driving shaft and each secured at one end in an opening r1 in one of the weights whilel its opposite end slides in an opening r2 in the other weight. The fast end of each guide rod r is preferably secured to its respective weighteby a screw s and the extent of the sliding movement of the other end of this rod with reference to its weight is limited by means of a screw 81 secured to the last mentioned weight and projecting into a longitudinal slot s2 formed in the sliding end of the guide rod r, as shown in Fig. 6.
The governor weights are yieldingly held in their innermost position by a spring tension device which preferably consists of two swivels or heads T each of which is pivoted to the inner arm of one of the elbow levers and is provided with a flange t forming a forwardly facing shoulder, a guide u of tubular form secured to each swivel head and projecting forwardly therefrom parallel with the driving shaft and into the recess or bifurcation of the weight on the same side of the driving shaft, a coil-shaped governor or return spring V surrounding each guide tube u and bearing at its rear end against the shoulder on the companion swivel head and an abutment disk W" movable axially on the reduced front ond of the supporting sleeve and engaging with the front ends of both return springs, and an adjusting screw w engaging with the front side of the abutment disk and working on an external screw thread formed on the reduced front end of the supporting sleeve. By screwing the nut w forwardly or backwardly on the supporting sleeve the tension of the governor springs may be reduced or increased for varying the resistance which they offer to the outward movement of the governor weights.
Upon rotating the driving shaft motion in the same direction at an increased speed is transmitted to the supporting sleeve by means of the transmitting gears g, 71., 2', J. Buring this rotation of the supporting sleeve the governor weights fly outwardly by centrifugal force and carry the front arms of the elbow levers in the same direction while their' inner or rear arms move lengthwise of the driving shaft, whereby the shifting sleeve and the valve rod are also moved forwardly lengthwise of the driving shaft and the valve connected with the valve rod is closed more or less. lVhile the governor weights are thus thrown outwardly the springs V are compressed but when the speed of the driving shaft is reduced these springs expand and operate to turn the elbow levers in vthe direction for moving the governor weights inwardly and also causing the valve rod to be moved rearwardly for opening the regulating valve to a greater extent.
ln order to prevent the governor from responding too suddenly when the load upon the engine is changed quickly, a retarding device is provided which preferably consists of two pistons or plungers ai sliding in the guide tubes r, heads .r1 closing those ends of the guide tubes r which are secured to the governor weight R1, and a piston or plunger rod g/ arranged in each guide tube r and secured at its inner end to the piston therein while its outer end is secured to a bracket or arm z fixed on the adjacent part of the governor weight in which the free end of t-he guide tube r slides, as shown in Fig. G.
If there is a sudden reduction in the load upon the engine the tendency to suddenly increase its speed is prevented by the resistance which is offered to the outward movement of the governor weights by the vacuum which is produced in the inner ends of the guide tubes r as the plungers are drawn out of the same. sudden increase of the load upon the engine is also prevented from causing the same to too suddenly decrease its speed owing to the resistance which is offered by the imprisoned air to the inward movement of the governor weights as the plungers m move toward the front or closed ends oit the guide tubes r.
My improved governor .is exceedingly compact in construction and therefore especially desirable where but a limited amount of space is available, the Several parts are so constructed and arranged that the same is not liable to get out ot' order and it et- 'ects a steady regulation of the valve which controls the motive agent of the engine, thereby rendering the saine especially suit able for use where steady running of the engine is desirable.
By arranging the springs V lengthwise between the weights and the supporting sleeve and connecting the same with the inner or rear arms of the governor levers, it is possible to use springs which are comparatively long and ot large, diameter with a minimum amount oit movement during the regulating operation, thereby causing' the springs to be more active and render-mg the tension of the same more uni't'orm in diitl'erent positions of the weights.
