GOVERNOR.
Specification ofr Letters Patent,
Patented Aug. 28, 1906,
Application iled December 24, 1904. Renewed January 24, 1906. Serial No. 297,610.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ADAMS BUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at North East, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Governor, oi which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to governors for controlling the flow of fluid under pressure to engine and other fluid-actuated devices.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a governor of substantial and economical construction in which the pressure of fluid tends to force the valve to open position, this movement being resisted by weighted arms that are moved outward under the influence of centrifugal force when the governor is rotated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a governor that may be readily adjusted to increase or decrease its sensitiveness.
Vith these and other obj ects inview, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter jully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size, and minor details oi the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
The accompanying drawing illustrates in sectional elevation a governor constructed in accordance with the invention.
The throttle-valve 10 is of the gate type and slides vertically in double guideways 11, arranged in the valve-casing 12. To the top oi' this valve is secured a plunger 15, that works in a small cylinder 16 at the top ofthe valve-casing, the plunger being constantly exposed to pressure by the luid to be controlled, and there is a constant upward pressure tending to open the valve and increase the quantity of i-luid flowing to the engine or other device to be controlled. Resting on top of the cylinder 16 is a disk 17, rooved to form a race for balls 18, the second alf of the ball-race being Jformed in a second disk 19 on top of said balls. Resting on top of the second disk 19 is a bevel-gear 20, to which movement is imparted in any desired manner, and depending from the under side of said bevel-gear is an annular flange 21, that encircles the disks 17 and 19, the balls 18,
and the upper portion of the cylinder 16 and protects the moving parts from. dust and dirt. Secured to the upper end of the plunger 15 is a non-revoluble stem 23, at the upper end of which is secured a disk 24. Fitting on the stem 23 is a revoluble tube 25, that is rigidly secured to the bevel-gear 20. The upper end of the tube 25 carries a pair of arms 26, to which are pivoted the upper portions of weighted levers 27. These levers are extended inward in the form of arms 28, that are connected by links 29 to a threaded collar 30, that is adjustably mounted on a cylinder 30. The cylinder 30 has an external thread for the reception of an internal thread lformed in a cup-shaped nut 31, which receives the disk 24, the disk being held from vertical play independently of said nut. This cup-shaped nut constitutes an oil-cup in which a suitable lubricant is placed to lessen the Jfriction between the lower portion of the nut and the disk 24.
In the operation of the device the lower piston or plunger 15 being subjected to the action ofthe steam or other fluid is moved upward and opens the valve 10. This upward movement is imparted by the stem 23 and disk 24 to the nut 31 and thence through the sleeve 30 and links 29 to the arms 28, causing the lower weighted ends of the levers 27 to move inward in the direction of said stem. The rotative movement imparted to said gear 2O is transmitted through the tube 25 and arms 26 to said weighted levers, and there is a tendency of the balls to move outward under the iniluence of centrifugal force, this movement being resisted by the pressure of the fluid acting on the piston 15. Should the rotative movement more than balance the pressure, the valve will be moved toward the closed position, and the quantity of steam passing to the engine or other device will be lessened. Should the steam be below the normal, the valve will be opened by gravity of the weights and a greater quantity of steam will pass to said engine.
Having thus described the invention, what is claime is- 1. The combination in a centrifugal governor, oi a valve-chamber, a gate-valve arranged therein, a c linder connected to the chamber, a piston isposed within the cylinder and connected to the valve, a stem connected to the piston, a revoluble tube surrounding the stem, brackets pro'ecting from the tube, an. eXternally-threa ed cylinder IOO IIO
carried by the stern, an adjustable eollar mounted on the cylinder, Weighted arms pivotally Connected to the brackets, and links connecting the inner ends of said arms to said collar.
2. The combination with a valve-ehaniber, of a gate-valve, a cylinder connected to the Chamber and exposed to pressure of the fluid passing therethrough, a piston disposed in said cylinder and Connected to the valve, ball-bearing disks on top of the cylinder, a stern extending upward from the piston, a bevel-gear mounted on the ball-bearings and having a dependent cylindrical flange extending over the ball-bearings and the upper portion of the cylinder, a revoluble tube sur* i rounding said stern, bracket-arms extending from the tube7 Weighted levers pivoted to said braoketarms, a disk at the upper end of the stem7 a two-part cup Within Whieh the disk is held from independent vertical play, said eup having external screw-threads, a collar mounted on the threaded portion of the oup, and means connecting said collar to the levers.
In testimony thatlI claim the foregoing asn my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
CHARLES ADAMS BUSH.
