The nature of my invention consists in constructing a gate with a hinge brmed with an iron rod, the lower end of which is spiral or auger-shaped, and working in a'slotted metal plate, and .the upper end playing in a strap', as hereinafter set forth.

A represents agate, constructed in the usual man- B B designate the uprights, connected by bars C O. To said bars the slats e e e are nailed.

G Gf represent the gate-posts, which are mortised into sill E.

The post Gis eut away on itsinner .surface about two-thirds of its width, leaving the remaining third as a rest for the gate when it is closed.

H represents an iron rod, passing-in a vertical position through bars C C, the said rod having its lower end formed spil-ally, and entering a slot in the' metal plate j; .which is confined to sill E.

'Ihe upper end of H plays in a hole in strap g, `the said strap being secured by bolts to post G', and then bent at a right angle to receive the end of rod H.
