Description

LARIMORE & WILLIAMS.
, Gar C pupling. A No. 95,360. Patented sept. 28,;1869,
2&1.
tntd gint-rt JOHN LAnit/IORE AND J.
gnant @jiji-rr.
M. WILLIAMS, or coNNERsviLLE, INDIANA. I
Lette/rs Patent No. 95,360, lated September 28, 1869.
IMPRoven RAILWAY-.CAR 'coUPmNa The Schedule referred to irl-these Letters Patent and m'akng peut of the Same- To all whom itv may concern Be it known that we, JOHN LARIMORE and J. M.
WILLIAMS, of Connersville, in the county of Fayette,
and inthe State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Coupling; and do pivoted jaws, situated in proper position for the link to operate upon them, causing the pinto drop into the link, as will be fully shown hereafter;` and, in order to -enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains, to make' and use the same, we will now proceed to ldescribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an upper inverted horizontal section.
Figure 2 isa longitudinal vertical section.
A represents the bumper of a railroad-car, in.which are the pivoted jaws B B, with shoulders i which act as rests for the coupling-'bolt C, while said bolt is The jaws B B are pivoted, near the -rear end, by pivots b b, the front ends of said jaws being forced inward by means of a spiral, rubber, or any other suitf able spring, D, on each side, which springs press against the rear ends of the pivoted jaws.
These jaws can befused as sides'of the bumper, and substituted for the permanent sides 'm m,- but we prefer the latter, as they act as covers'in keeping out rain, snow, dirt, Snc., from the inside.
E is a stationary stop, against the rear end of which rest the springs D D. l
Ihe front end of said stop is forked, and has a rounded receptacle, in order to guide the link immediately under the coupling-bolt C, wheninserted.
rIhe coupling-bolt C is round, and has a projection, F, at its top, which extends so far down, that when inserted into the draw-head, it will j rest upon the lilik H.
' The coupling-bolt` passes up through a slot in the topof the bumper, and passes up through a slotted tube, G',`on the top of said bumper, which tube acts i as apguideV for the bolt. I
Fitting over 'the tube G isa cap or cover, I, which can be removed, thus allowing the bolt to be detached from the bumper, when-found necessary.
Connecting the cap or cover I with the couplingbolt O is achain, K, of suitable length, so as not to obstruct the pin' when dropping -into position.
In the bottoni of bumper, and near the front end of stop E, is a slot, L, down through which the dirt, Ste.,
which'entersat the mouth of bumper, will pass'.
When the coupling-link H is inserted in the bumper, y
it forces the shoulders il t', on the front ends of the jaws B B, open, or outward, which releases the coupling-bolt O, and allows it to drop down into the link, thus coupling' the cars.
Having thus fully described our invention, I 'What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l 1. The bumper Afprovided with pivotcdjaws B B, having shoulderst i, constructed substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
' 2. The combination of the pivoted jawsB B, stop E, and springs D D, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth. j
,3. The stop E, constructedsubstantial] y as described,
and for the purposes set forth.
4. In combination with the bumper A, the slotted tube G and cap I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5.' vThe combination ofthe bumper A, pivoted jaws B B, springs D D, Vcoupling-bolt C, projection F, slotted tube G, and cap I, all constructed and operating substantially as 'and for thepurposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands, this'9th day of .J uly', 1869, JOHN LARIMORE.
