Description

M. ODONOVAN.
FASTENING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED FBB.18,1909.

WITNESSES MARY ODONOVAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FASTENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 29, 1910.
Application filed. February 18, 1909. Serial No. 478,557.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY ODoNovAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastening Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved fastening device, more especially designed for use on ironing boards, to permit the user to conveniently and quickly fasten the cloth cover in place on the ironing board, or to remove the same from the board for cleaning, renewal or other purposes, the fastening device permitting the user to properly stretch the cloth cover and to hold the same in a stretched position.
,The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an under side view of the ironing board provided with the improvement, parts being broken out; Fig.2 is an enlarged transverse section of the improvement on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective View of the improvement.
The ironing board A of the usual shape is covered at its upper face by a cloth covering B, folded over the edges of the board onto the inner side and along the margin thereof, the bottom portion B of the said cloth covering B following the margin of the board and extending over keepers C, secured to the under side of the board A. The keepers 0 range along the margin of the board A and each is preferably made triangular in shape, the apex C being farthest from the margin of the board and secured to the board by a nail, screw or other fastening device 0 The keeper C has its base C next to and ranging approximately parallel to the margin of the board, and the rail base C is curved outward adjacent to the opening C to form a passage for a pin D or other fastening device passed by the operator through the covering at an angle thereto, and in the direction from the inside toward the outside of the board, so that the pin D or like fastening device enters the keeper C, thus fastening the bottom portion B of the covering B securely in place on the under side of the board A. Now by the arrangement described the user can readily stretch the cloth covering B over the top of the board A, and can fasten the covering firmly in place in a stretched condition by the use of the pins D or other fastening devices passing through the bottom portions B of the covering and engaging the keepers C. The keepers C are preferably made of sheet metal, or other suitable material, and are singly secured to the under side of the board A by nails or like fastening devices C as above described. The keepers G at the corners of the board are preferably staggered and placed close together, to permit the user to securely fasten the folded overlapping corners B of the bottom portion B in place, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1.
The fastening device shown and described is very simple and durable in construction, and can be readily placed in position on ironing boards, such as heretofore constructed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
An ironing board provided at its under side with keepers ranging along the margin of the ironing board, each keeper being triangular in shape and having its base bent outward and ranging next to the margin of the board, the apex of each keeper being fastened to the board.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this spcification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
' MARY ODONOVAN.
