To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VVALTER G. DICKIN- SON, citizen of the United States, residing at Beaver Dam, in the county of Dodge and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaving- Brushes and Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in brushes and holders therefor, and the invention has for its object an improved shaving brush and holder which are so constructed as to admit of the brush being applied to the holder and removed therefrom without the necessity of touching the bristles, the holder being designed to effectually inclose the brush in order to protect the same from contact with dirt or other foreign particles, thus insuring of the brush being maintained in a sanitary condition.

A further object of the invention is a simple, durable and efficient construction of a device of this character wherein the brush when applied to and removed from the holder, is arranged to be passed longitudinally therethrough in the direction opposite to the direction of the bristles, whereby to preclude injury to the latter, as is likely to occur where the brush is inserted in the holder through one endthereof and is removed through the same end, in the usual manner.

With these and other objects in view that will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and then point out the novel features of in the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:

designates a shaving brush which is of conventional form and is provided with the usual handle 2. At its end adjacent to the brush, the handle is formed with an exteriorly threaded cylindrical coupling section 3, the diameter of which is the maximum diameter of the handle.

The holder for the brush comprises a tubular body portion l that is formed of glass, metal, hard rubber, or other suitable material, and that is substantially equal in length to the total length of the brush 1 and the coupling section 3. The body portion is open at its ends and is of such internal diameter as to admit of the brush and handle being passed longitudinally therethrough. At one end the body portion is formed with internal threads 5 adapted to engage with the coupling section 3 to retain the brush within the holder, the coupling section being capable of being screwed freely through the internal threads for a purpose to be presently disclosed. The opposite end of the body portion is closed through the medium of a cap 6 fitting thereon and having a removable connection therewith. The cap is preferably hinged to the body portion so as to be capable of quick removal.

In practice when it is desired to apply the brush to the holder, the latter is supported in a vertical position with the threaded end lowermost and the cap 6 removed from the upper end. The shaving brush is then dropped into the holder with the handle 2 downward, whereby the relatively smaller portion of the handle is projected through the threaded end of the holder to admit of the coupling section 3 being conveniently turned into engagement with the threads 5 to hold the parts together. By returning the cap 6 to place, the brush 1 is completely inclosed by the holder, so as to be effectually protected from moisture, or dirt, or the like.

In removing the brush from the holder, the projecting portion of the handle is grasped and turned in the same direction as before, so as to screw the coupling section 3 entirely through the internal threads 5, whereupon to effect the disconnection of the parts and admit of the brush being withdrawn from the holder through the threaded end thereof.

through the opposite end thereof, the brush is passed longitudinally entirely through the holder in the direction opposite to the directi on of the bristles, so that the latter are prevented from being turned backwardly, as would result in the brush becoming misshapen, or otherwise damaged.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be apparent that I have provided an im proved device which may be employed in connection with brushes of various kinds; which insures of the brush being maintained in a sanitary condition when not in use; which is particularly attractive and embodies to a marked degree the characteristics of simplicity, durability and efiiciency; and which is composed of comparatively few parts adapted to be easily and cheaply manufactured.

The holder not only serves to protect the brush from dirt or the like but also prevents the brush from coming into contact with and smearing or soiling other objects.

It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to brushes of that type employed in shaving, but the features of the invention may be embodied in brushes of a similar form that are susceptible of various difierent applications.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:

1. The combination of a brush, a handle provided at its end fixed to the brush with an exteriorly threaded coupling section, the diameter of which is the maximum diameter of the handle, and a holder comprising a tubular body portion open at both-ends and of an internal diameter to admit of the brush and handle being passed entirely therethrough, the body portion being formed at one end with internal threads for engaging with the coupling section to retain the brush within the holder, and a removable closure for the opposite end of the body portion, the coupling section being adapted to be screwed freely through the internally threaded end to admit of the removal of the brush therethrough.

2. The combination of a brush, a handle provided at its end fixed tothe brush with an exteriorly threaded coupling section, the diameter of which is the maximum diameter of the handle, and a holder comprising a tu bular body portion open at both ends and of an internal diameter to admit of the brush and handle being passed therethrough, the body portion being formed at one end with internal threads for engaging with the coupling seetion to retain the brush within the holder, and a cap fitted on the opposite end of the body portion and hinged thereto, the coupling section adapted to be screwed freely through the internally threaded end of the body portion to admit of the removal of the brush therethrough.
