PRINTING-PRESS DELIVERY-BOARD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it linown that I, MICHAEL A. Dnorrconn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Printing-Press Delivery- Boards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of high speed printing presses and its object is to avoid the stoppage or slowing down of the press while changing or emptying the delivery tables.
The nature of the invention is fully disclosed below and is also illustrated in the accompanying drawing in whicli- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of the delivery end of the press; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 and F ig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the members of the screw frame by which the tables are lowered.
In said drawing 4L represents the tape roller carrying' the tapes 5 by which the sheets are brought to and dropped upon the delivery tables. I show a plurality of these tables, 6 being the main or lower one which rests upon the L-shaped supports 7 which are united to the nuts 8 mounted upon the adjusting screws 9 at the corners of the table, the screws being geared to the hand operated shaft 10 having operating wheel 11 adapted to give motion to the screws at both ends of the table and also to the shafts 12 at the sides of the table, by which the screws at the back are made to move in unison with those at the front. The supports 7, it will be noticed, are adapted to .permit the table to be taken out edgewise with the accumulated sheets thereon and the table is also provided with guards 14 to prevent the sheets of paper from sliding laterally while being delivered.
When the desired number of sheets have accumulated upon the table (i, I insert in the channel iron supports 15 which are stationarily secured at the upper ends of the side members 16 of the screw frame, a very light table which may be desirably made of a surrounding frame 17 with a woven wire center 1S. This table which I call the temporary table is so light that it can be inserted in place over the table G without stoppage of the press or slowii'ig down, and it Specification of Letters Patent.

is intended to remain in acting position only long enough to permit the removal of the table (3 and its accumulated sheets, or the placing in position of a second table (5 over table (3 as shown in Fig. l. This table is also preferably provided with guards Il; at each end. As soon as the changes have been made in the main table or the supplementary table Ga, the table 17, 1S is removed with the few sheets which will have been deposited upon it.
`\Vhen desired the main table is lowered on to the truck 19 and removed, the light table 17 being in position while this is done.
By this invention I entirely do away with thenecessity for stopping the press and l am enabled to take care of the sheets without slowing down and no damage is done to the delivered sheets.
The side members 1G are preferably bracketed to t-he frame 20 of the press by brackets 2l.
Operation: The sheet receiving devices are located at the delivery end of the press as usual and the sheets are fed by the delivery mechanism onto the receiving table (3 when it is in'uppermost position; and when a suitable number of sheets have accumulated thereon a supplemental table Ga is slipped on table (3 over the accumulated pile of sheets, as indicated in Fig. 1, and the table G is then lowered an extent equal to the height of the guards 1l; when the supplemental table Ga is filled another one is placed on top of the same to be filled with sheets,- the table G being lowered as the supplemental tables are placed thereon, the main table G being ultimately lowered upon the truck 19. Then the loaded truck is removed. The truck and the receiving and supplemental tables are old per se, and heretofore it has been necessary to stop the press each time a supplemental table had to be inserted or removed-and also when the truck had to be removed. By aid of my invention the supplemental tables can be inserted whenever desired and the loaded truck can be removed and replaced when desired without stopping the operation of the press or the delivery of the sheets. I am enabled to do this by use of the light removable table or sheet catcher 17 which, as above explained, can be easily and quickly inserted in, or removed from, the guides 15 between the de- Cri livery and receiving tables in the short interval of time between the delivery of two successive sheets. IVith my invention when the operator desires to insert another supplementary table Ga or to remove the truck, he takes the removable table or sheet catcher which is normally out of the 1nacl1ine,-in serts its edge in the guides l5 and then, as soon as one sheet drops, quickly thrusts the sheet catcher into place so as to catch the following sheet; and the succeeding sheets will be also caught thereby, giving the operator time to lower the main table and insert another supplemental table or change the trucks. Then the operator has the parts again in position desired for receiving the sheets on the main or supplemental table, he simply quickly withdraws the removable sheet catcher and sheets accunmlated thereon, without. stopping the delivery of the sheets, the latter simply dropping onto the supplemental or main table as bei'ore. By this arrangement I do not require any automatic lowering of the main table as this can be done by hand.
I claim l. In combination with the sheet delivery mechanism of a printing machine and a receiving table upon which the sheets are delivered, of supports above the table and below the delivery and a light removable sheet catcher adapted to be placed on or removed from said supports in the intervals between the delivery oit' successive sheets, and when Uuayxao inserted to receive the sheets delivered from the press while the tables are being adjusted, inserted, or removed.
2. In combination with the` delivery mechanism oit a printing press, a vertically adjustable sheet receiving table, and supplemental sheet receiving tables adapted to be placed on the receiving table, ot' supports for a sheet catcher located intermediate the delivery mechanism and the receiving table, and a light removable sheet catcher adapted to be placed by hand on the said supports, or removed therefrom, in the intervals of time between the delivery of successive sheets, said catcher when inserted holding the delivered sheets while the operator is changing the tables.
In combination with the delivery mechanism of a printing press, and removable sheet receiving tables on which the sheets are delivered, of a light removable sheet catching table or sheet catcher adapted to be inserted by hand in position between the delivery and the tables, or removed from such position in the intervals of time between the delivery of successive sheets and without stopping the press, said catcher when inserted receiving and holding the sheets delivered while the operator is changing or adjusting the tables.
