IMPROVEMENT IN PEDDLERS WAGON.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o the same.

'Be it known that we, SALEM T. LAMB and GEORGE A. RANKIN, of New Albany,`in t'he coun'tyot' Floyd, and State of Indiana, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in leddlersWagons; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ot' the same, reference being had to `the accompanying drawings,v making a part of this specificatiomin which- Y A p Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the body of the wagon, the ruiming gear being omitted, and

with the side doors open, or partially so, to show the Figure` 3 represents, inperspective, a folding bench, stand, or counter, detached from the wagon, but carried by it, asaud for a purpose that-will be explained.

--There are several conditions and necessities in and about a peddlers wagon, which it has been our object and purpose to improve: Y

First, that the goods carried therein should be perfectly protected from the rain i Second, that they may be carried about without `being damaged by the transportation;

Third, that they should be comparatively secure from depredations; p

Fourth, that they should lbeso classied, and assorted, and kept, as that they may be of easy access at all times; t

Fifth, that they may bedsplayed with readiness and convenience; and

Sixth and iiually, that the user, who may be said l to live iuhs wagon, may carry his wardrobe,be pro-v tected from the elements, and also carry with him such implements as his team may require in properly caring for it.

Thefront, rear, and central bows 1, 2, 3,' are pivoted to a stud, o, at each side of the wagon or seat-part thereof, and the intervening bows 4 5 are pivoted to the central bow 3, at the point C.

tached to the body of the wagon, by means of thel pairs of toggle-levers S, 9, 10, and to the toggle-joints ofeaeh of these pairs of toggle-levers is pivoted 'one end respectively of the connecting-bars 11,12, 13, the other ends of which are pivoted at dierent points along or on aV hand-lever, 14, that is pivoted and swings on the post or stud o;

By taking hold of the hand-levers 14, (there being one at each side or end of the sat,) the top can be raised and held up, the holding being done by the toggles passing below aline drawn through their pivoted points on the bows, or let down at pleasure,u and with the greatest facility and ease to the operator, the system of levers and of hanging vor hinging the several parts being so arranged as to operate at all points simultaneously and with themost available use and power of the lever-connections.

The section or member 0 of they body has a series of shelves, p p, which make a series of apartments, q, all of which are protected and secured by a door, D.

Behind these apartments, and accessible by the hinged doors E E, is a series of drawers, fr 7' fr, sep` arated by a vertical 'partition, s, against which the doors E E close, and so that either tier oi drawers may he readily got at.

These drawers may be used for carrying the ner .qualities of goods, and such as are better` kept assorted and separated.

The hinges t t, by which the doors E are hung, have curved leaves, so that while cach door can iit in closely when shut, it may, when opened, swing clear ofthe corner oi' the body, and lie close to its sides, and thus make free'space for sliding the drawers out or in.

It should have been stated of the shelves and apartments in the sections, that they only extend half way across the body, there being a similar series on the opposite side, arranged and protected in a similarway.

"his way of dividing the apartments centrally of the body in its longitudinal line, not only maires them more readily accessible from the sides,.but it admits of a central longitudinal frame-Work in the body, withoutwhich it would scarcely hold its load; and this central framework supports the WaysA c, on which the drawers r run, and which ways and Apartition constitute or are a part of the longitudinal central frame f of the body.

Under the sections B and C of the body is hung, one on each side of the wagon, a swinging counter, F, on which the goods may be laid for inspection, or for convenience of measuring or selling.

This counter is suspended from the body underneath by suspending-bars w w, piveterl to both counter and body, so that by drawing ont the counter it will drop down, as shown in fig. '1, and by pushing it in, it will rise up against the bottomy of the body, and then, by turning the fasteuings x x, which swing under keepers under the body, it will be held there.

At the rear of the body of the wagon there is a case or cage, y, into which can he slipped and there carried a foldingr or fold-up, bench, G, g. 3, which is designed for the seller or buyer, or both, to stand up so as to reach or look into the upper 'tiers cf drawers, shelves, or apartments.

The legs or supports z of this bench are hinged so as to fold up, as seen to the left of fig. 3, or to be swung ont and braced by the hinged braces a' a', which have catches to make them rigid when out, but so also as to fold up with said supports when they are folded up.

Thr` spring b on said bench is to catch and hold it in or against the case or eagetoprevent it from drop- I ping out accidentally, by the jar of the wagon.

For giving' strength to this structure, and especially that portion of it Where the drawers o' are arranged and carried, the contents of which are heavy, wc ar range and 'secure the panels in a vertical position,

and thus the panels strengthen the structure very much. f i

We have shown a conm and carrying the counter ald fold-up bench, but do not limit ourselves to this cx ict plan. carry aud ruse these appliances in connection with a peddlers wagon, and were the first to so apply and use them, we claim them as our invention.

Modificationsmay and no doubt will be made in our construction of peddlers wagons, with a view of eva-ding cnr rights; but so long as. the general chan acterist-ics or" our structure are preserved, We shall claim such incre eb anges as involving our inven tion.

The construction and arrangement of the v -agoram body, viz., of the three-sections or memhers,` with their shelves and apartments protected, and accessible by means of hinged doors at the sides and ends, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. Also, in combination with the drivers seat, a rising and falling top that is connected through toggle'l levers and bars to lifting-levers in convenientposition. to the occupant of said seat, so that said occupant may raise and hold up orlet down said top at pleasure, substantially' described.

3. Hanging the doors E to the body of the wagon by hinges having curved leaves, so that said doors may swing close into the frame when shut, andentirely out oi the way of vthe sliding rawers when opened, as set forth and explained.

4. Also, in combination with the body of the wagon, the swinging counter, connected and suspended thereto, as and for the purpose described.V

5. Als'o, in combination with the body of the Wagon and with a fold-np bench, the case or cage, or its equivalent, for containing and carrying said hinged or fold-up bench, as and for the purpose described.
