Specification of Letters lPatent.
Application filed January 18, 1909.

serial No. 473,008.
.To all whom it moy concern:
Be it known that we, Ronnn'r liv. Pnnsco'r'r and l'limiax J. lfnrr'rinn, citizens of the United States1 residing at Kansas City,'in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri7 have invented certain ne and useful Ylinpiorenients in liroodino' and Nesting Coops, of which the. following rs a speeitication.
This invention relates to brooding and nesting coops and more especiall)vv to that clas capable of being' transformed troni operative to knock-down condition or vice versa, easiljyv and quickly, our object being' to produce a device of this character consisting' of parts all bearing a hinged relation but incapable of detacliu'ient and inisplacement.
'further `object is to produce a coop ot this' cha 'acter ot siinplehstronpr, durable and cheap coiistruction.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar lcatures ot' construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it mai,T be Alnltiy understood ret'erence is to be had tothe accompanying' draw irre', in which; n
Figure l, is a perspective view of a broodingia'nd nestingcoop embodying our invention. Fig. 2, is an enlarged vertical cross section or' the coop. Fig. il, is a horizontal section on a larger scale than F fi. showing one end wall and parts oi.' the side walls; bottom and root in lmocledinvn or :folded relation. Fig. i. an enlarged vertical section taken on the line, IVW-lV olf Fie'.l l; Fig. 5, an enlarged vertical cross section ot a part ot' the coop to disclose more clearlyY the construction and arrangement oll the cap-strip.
,in the said drawing, where like reference eintrat-,ters identit)v correspondin@` parts;y l indicates a brooding and nesting' coop constructed as t'ollows; Q indicates gabled end w lls olf, sheot-nietal reinforced atv their edges by stitleninp' wires 2L and secured to each end wall in the vertical plane of its apexand at its lower margin is a plate il provided with a pai r o'l inwardly-i'n'ojecting llanges t3 indicates parallel side walls liinp'edlpy connectedl aty 7 to thc vertical margins of end walls 2 so that the side and end walls shall be capable oli collapsing' to a position anal! ogolis to that shown in lfig. I3, :ind hinged as at it lo the side walls tl :it their lower edges7 are plates 9 which are adapted to occupy horizontal positions and conjointly constitute the tloor of the coop. The inner edges of the floor plates l are stitilened by reinforce wires l0, and when folded down to horizoir tal position7 rest upon the inwardly-projecting` flanges and in such position tend to preventcollapsing movement 'of the hinged walls, snch collapsing nnoveinent being still further guarded against by providing one ot the. tlanees :3, with upwnrdly-projecting points or pins for engagement with holes il, in the 'lool' plates'fl,
l1 indicates reinforce wires for the upper edges of Aside walls G, and hinged to said wires are the roof-plates or sections l2 terminating at their upper or inner edges in stitfemng rolls 13, adapted -to rest near their ends upon the pitched upper edges of the end walls, the said roof-plates or lsections being also provided with depending' ribs 14: to fit snugly against the inner sides of the upper edges ot end walls 2 so as to guard against. collai'usinp'-movement and eoiiperate. with the bottom plates in producing a suhstantia'l and rigid coop. rlhe rolls 'formed aty the inner or upper edges olf the root'- plates provide a pair of external grooves l5 to receive the edges or tongues of a slidablo cap-strip 1G whereby said roof plates are held firmly together and the joint between them is bridged to exclude water from the coop. The said cap-strip has n central npwaidly-projecting -rib .t7 provided with holes 18 to receive the ends of a wire handle 19 by which the coop can. be 'readilyY handled when in set-up condition.
(lne end wall provided at one side of its 'vertical center with an opening 2G of ample size t'or a hen to hare ingress or egress to and from the coop, ond pivoted at, 2l adjacent to said oieningj are an imper- Vtorate door 22. a skeleton door 23 and n io"ainiii us door eitlier oil said doors being' capable et brii'lg'iuggj the openinp- Q0. `When it is desired to prevent rain beatingl into the coop and also to protect the coop in stormy wmther `generally, the door Q2 is closed. The door 9, is used to close the opening' 2t) when ity is desired to keep 'the lien in but permit the little chickens to pass 'freely out of oi.' into the coop. lo exclude foxes, e: tsn rats and other rodents from the coop and preven, the hen or chickens 'l'roni passinoY out and ffftjadinit light and air to the coop., the door Q-i is used, it being obvious that in order to ventilato the coop it must be provided with Ventilation holes, in this instance identiiied by the character f2"- and lj'ornied in the rear end Wall, as shown in liio. l D 2o indicates a llangec heit hook pro-- jecting from Vthe end 'wall p1 44vided with 1 the opening, as a'support for the doors when i open, a similar hoolr 2G being provided as a support for the doors when closed, it being understood of course that any suitable l means, not shown, nray be employed to fasten either oi,I the doors in closed position, y if desired. llVhen it is desired. to store or traiisport the coop, the handle l5) and cap-strip are l l l l l removed. '.lhe root-plates are then swung in the direction indicated by the arrows,. out y'ard and downward to vertically pendent position. The bottoni plaies i) are then swung in the direction indicated by the L adjacent arrows to a. vertical position at the inner sid is of the side Walls G, so that the said side walls and plates l) and l2 shall occupy substantially parallel. positions. Pressure is then applied to cause the side walls and the end walls lo collapse on their hinges 7 so that the walls 2 shall approximately extend in the saine general direction as the falls 5, Fig. 3 showing a parto'l the coop with the parts in a partially iolded relation. When JLhus folded it is obvious that 'the coop occupies but little space and that a great many of theln in such collapsed condition, may he shipped at a minimum cost. y
.Frein the above description it will be apparent that We have produced a. brooding; and nesting coop embodying the features of :ulvantage enun'ierated as desirable and capable o'l modification in ininor particulars without departing from the 'principle oi construction involved.
Having thus described the invention what l we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-latent, is:
l. A device of the character described, comprising end and side walls hngedly connected 'together at theiryertical edges, a pair oit bottoni-plates hinged at their outer edges lo the lower edges of the side Walls and adapted conjointly to constitute the bottoni oi the coop, ineans carried by and projecting inward from the end walls and underlying and supporting the bottomplates when occupying a horizontal position, a pair of roof-plates hinged at their outer edges to the upper edges of the side Valls and adapted to fold down upon the end n'alls and eonjointly forni the roof of the coop, and formed With external parallel grooves adjacent to their meeting edges, and a slidable cap-strip fitting over the meeting inner edges oi the roof-plates and Slidably engaging the said grooves of said plates; one of the end walls having an opening and a door to cover or uncover said opening.
2. .in a brood coop, side pieces, and gabled end pieces hinged thereto, bottoni pieces hinged to said side pieces and adapted to turn outwardly from a. l'loor position, means for retaining said bottoni pieces in a floor posi- Lion, top pieces hinged to said side pieces and adapled to turn against the side pieces or rest on the g: bled edges of the end pieces, and a ridge clamp for binding the top pieces together, the side pieces being adapt-- ed lo ioldagainst respective end pieces when the top and bottoni pieces are folded thereagainst, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
l'n testimony whereof we affix our signatures, in the presence oi? tivo witnesses.
