FOLDING SHIPPING-CRATE.

Be it known that I, AnoLri-r \Vrss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brandsville, in the county of Howell and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Shipping- Orates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in folding shipping crates, especially to that class adapted to the conveying of poultry and the like.

It has for its object to provide a simple inexpensive structure which will permit of a freedom of ventilation while the contents of the crate are in transit.

Referring to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my crate.

Fig. i is a transverse sectional view taken on the line el-i in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the crate in its knocked down position. Fig. 6 is a trans verse sectional view of one of the corners in one side of the crate showing the spring catch mechanism.

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a bottom frame of the crate constructed in a solid piece of any preferred material to which are secured by hinges 8 upright end members 3, which members may or may not be made of a solid strip of material such as wood, with the upper portions thereof beveled as indicated at 3. The upright members 3 are so constructed and hingedly secured at their lower portions to the frame 1 that when the crate is to be returned empty these upright portions are designed to be folded inwardly and downwardly so as to rest immediately upon the bottom frame. The thickness of the upright members 3 must be not greater than the height of a strip 4, said strip 4 being secured by any preferred means to the bottom frame 1', and adapted to carry a side frame 5-5, this side frame 55 being provided with a means for ventilating, consisting of any Specification of Letters Patent.

preferred material such as wire 6 woven or secured at any preferred angle. The frame 55 is hingedly secured at its lower horizontal portion by hinges 7 which are secured to the strip 4:, and the upper horizontal portion is hingedly secured to a corresponding horizontal portion of a lid 9, the lower hinges 7 having the extending ear portions thereof secured on the inner side of said lower horizontal portion and strip 4, whereby the side member 55 may swing inwardly and downwardly upon the upright members 3. The upper horizontal portion is so hingedly secured to the corresponding horizontal portion of the frame 9 that the ears of the hinges are secured to the outside of the frame, whereby when the member 5 is folded inward and downward upon the upright members 3 the lid 9 extends horizontally from the frame 5-5, when in said lowered position. A side frame, on the opposite side of the frame 1, of the side member 55 corresponds to said side member with the exception that the lower horizontal portion is so hinged to a strip corresponding to the strip 4: that the ears of the hinges are fastened on the out side instead of on the inside as in the previously described member 5-5, and the upper horizontal portion of said opposite member is so hingedly secured to a corresponding horizontal portion of the lid 9 that the ears of the hinges are secured on the inside thereof so that when the crate is in its knocked down position the corresponding member to the side member i5-5 will extend horizontally outward from the strip, corresponding to the strip 4:, and afford a seat for a portion of the lid 9 which will rest thereon. On the inner face of the upper horizontal portion of the frame 5-5 and at either end thereof, is a spring catch 11 designed to hold the upright members 3 from swinging inwardly when the crate is in its assembled condition, while the beveled portion 3 at the upperend of the upright members 3 is received in a corresponding beveled portion 9 in the ends of the lid 9, by which the cooperation of the beveled portions thus described not only give a finished appearance to the crate but are for the purpose of arresting the outward move ment of the upright members 8. A trap door 10 of any preferred type is hingedly secured at one of the end portions of the lid 9 whereby it is possible to place within the crate the articles desired to be transported therein, and also to disengage the spring latches 11 in order that the crate may be dismantled or knocked down.

What I claim is:

1. The herein described device comprising the combination with a bottom frame and parallel strips secured thereon, of upright members hingedly secured to said bottom frame, beveled portions in the upper end of each of said upright members, side frames hingedly secured to said strips, a lid, beveled portions in each end of said lid, said beveled portions corresponding to the beveled portions in the upright members and adapted to prevent said upright members from swinging out of their normal upright position, andv a means for preventing said upright members from swinginginwardly when said device is in its assembled position.

'ihe herein described device comprising the combination with a bottom frame and parallel strips secured laterally thereon, of a pair of upright members hingedly secured to said bottom frame at their lower ends and beveled portions in their upper ends, said upright members corresponding in thickness to the height of said strips, whereby when said upright members are swung inwardly and downwardly they will not extend above the height of said strips, a pair of parallel side frames extending vertically from and hingedly secured to said strips, a lid having atrap door therein, a means whereby said lid and. said parallel side members cooperate to swing downwardly, when said device is in its knocked down position, a further means in the ends of said lid for cooperating with the beveled portions of said upright members, whereby said uprightmembers are retarded when swung to a. vertical position, means for securing said upright members when swung to their vertical position.
