To all whom fit may concern:`

4Be it known that I, HENRY Oonncrz, of Chicago,

4in the county of Cook, and State` of Illinois, have in,-

vented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdesoription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of yt-his specification, and ,to the letters ofk reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.

To enable others skilled in the art to construct and i use my invention, I will proceedto describe it.

`My invention relates to boots and shoes, and consists in the 4construction and application of metallic heels, of a novel form, to boots and shoes, in connection withmetallic counters and leatherlifts secured to the projections of the metallic heel.

Figure 4 is a cross-sectionof `the same; Figure 5 is a perspective view of a modification of of any size desired, a heelpiece, B, having on its rear inner side a projection, a, and around on its lower side, a series of projections, b, and shaped, as clearly shown The stiiiener A,I insert in the counter ofv a boot or shoe, as clearly shown in figs. 3 and 4, and the heelpiece or heel B, I connect to the'boot or shoe, by means of screws, which also enter'the stiener A, and bind both it andthe heel, or'llieelpiece 13,1 irmly and securely l together.`

Ou the bottom of the heel-piece B, I place .one or two pieces of leather, Qforthe purpose of completing the heel, .Thesepieces ofleather are driven upon the projections b, as clearly shown in figs. 3 and 4.

I sometimes cast both the stiifener for the counter and the heel-piece together, so as to form one piece,

D,-as clearly shown in fig. 5, and then apply it to a boot or shoe, -as clearly shown in iig. 6.

By meansV of these metallic devices, -I 'am able to produce a 'boot or shoe that will always hold the heel of the foot, firmly and securely in position. They will prevent-the counters from running. over, 4and will aid in keeping the entire boot or shoe straight upon the foot, and thus secure an even wear of the sole.

Having thusdeseribed my invention,
