EXTENSION-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1910.
Application filed May 18, 1909. Serial No. 496,745.
'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. ZUK, a citizen of Russia, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in extension hooks for lace curtains and shade rollers, and the objects of my improvements are simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and etficiency in use.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective View of the upper part of a Window casing with a pair of my extension hooks in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of my extension hooks, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the same in part broken out. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the bracket to my extension hook, previous to bending.
A is the bracket to my extension hook, formed of sheet metal, provided with a laterally extending supporting arm 10, and a hook shaped arm 11, which in the finished article extends forwardly from the said laterally extending supporting arm 10. The said supporting arm has parallel top and bottom edges and in the top edge is provided with a series of transverse locking slots 12. As shown the said hook shaped arm 11 in projecting forward drops downward and then swings upward by a sweeping curve, and at about the low point of the curve is provided with a shade roller receiving slot 13 in the upper edge, which is at a suitable distance forward to have a shade roller B and shade supported in the said slot clear the window casing C. At the forward end the said hook shaped arm 11 is provided with an upwardly projecting and integral pin 14, adapted to be received in a suitable hole in a lace cnrtainpole D for supporting the same. E is the bracket support for my extension hook, made of sheet metal and comprises essentially a shallow box like body 16, provided with narrow vertical slots 17 in the two opposed vertical side walls 18 adapted to fittingly receive and support the said lateral supporting arm 10 of the bracket A. The said bracket support E may be provided as shown with support ing ears 19, extending upward and downward respectively from the top and bottom walls 20 of the said box like body 16, the
said lugs having holes 21 suitable for supporting screws. One of the side walls 18 is provided with a locking latch l pivoted at the upper end on the pin 22 so that the lower edge 23 swings across the space of the slots 17 when swinging downward and of a thick ness such as to be receivable in any of the said series of locking slots 12 in the said top edge of the supporting arm 10 of the bracket A, and provided with a forwardly projecting tip or handle 21, which projects suitably in front of the front face 25 of the said body 16 for convenience in operating.
As set up for use the said bracket support E is first secured to the window casing C by screws in the screw holes 21 so that when the said supporting arm 10 is in position in the slots 17 the bracket A. may he slid horizontally back and forth. Then the bracket A is placed in position for support by means of the arm 10 in the slots 17 as described. A pair of brackets A would include one right handed and one left handed as shown in Fig. 1. By sliding the brackets laterally they may be adjusted for spread to accommodate different lengths of poles and rollers, different width of windows, and differences in the spread of the bracket supports, and when finally adjusted they may be locked in adjustment by means of the locking latch and locking slots as described.
For convenience in production and shipment, I prefer to make up the brackets to my extension hook flat, as shown in Fig. By this plan they may be packed to take up a minimum of space, and no attention from a production standpoint need be given to the feature of mating up rights and lofts. I accomplish this result by making the bracket of bendable material, so that the same may be bent across the supporting arm 10, as at the dotted line 26 shown in the said Fig. 5, to make either a right or a left as desired.
Special attention may be given to the design and finish of the parts to obtain a pleasing effect, so that while performing the useful function of a combination support for lace curtains and a curtain shade my device may in itself be ornamental as well.
I claim as my invention:
In an extension hook for curtains in combination a bracket, a bracket holder, and a latch, the said bracket comprising a forwardly extending member adapted for a curtain support, and a laterally extending the said latch above the corresponding slot 10 in said side Wall, the said latch comprising a flat plate pivotally mounted by said means, adapted to be operated so as to engage with said kerfs.
JOSEPH M. ZUK. Vitnesses:
JOSEPH RYAN, SHEFFIELD H. CLARKE.
