This invention relates to rod locks 'tor turn buckles or similar machine elements wherein right and .lett hand threaded rods or screws are employed 'tor holding two oppositely po sitioned parts in their correct or adjusted positions, and an object. otI my invention is to provide a turn buckle or the like with means whereby the rod or rods can be securely held against rotation with the yokey member or nut oth the turn buckle.

Upon reiterence to Fig. l particularly, it will be seen that the turn buckle itselt is ot' the usual and well known 'form but the said buckle will be described as comprising a y yoke 'l provided at its ends with interiorly threaded nut portions 2 and Il arranged to receive correspondingly threaded portions of rods 4 and 5. The nut -portions 2 and are connected to each other by spaced parallel arms G and 7. As illustrated the rod 5 is provided adjacentV to its inner extremity with a pair o'l" verti ally disposed grooves S which in this instance are ot semi-circular 'torm cross sectionally. These grooves are thus arranged to receive the parallel arms t) ot a locking member or clement l() which al'e disposed between the arms and T ol the yoke ot the turn buckle. 'lhe locking element or melnber is preticrabtv formed from malleable metal or rod ot' tubular t'orm which is originally bent upon itselt in U- lorm as clearly illustrated in Fig. 't ot the drawing. 'lhis construction is such that the rods I- and 5 ot the turn buckle can be properly adjusted as will be readily understood. a'l'ter which, the locking member or element t() can be operatively placed in position with respect to the rod 5 and the arms t3 and 7 ot the yoke l.
Upon reference particularly to Fig. 2 itI will be seen that the arms 9 ot the locking member or element are connected to each other by means of a curved or bite portion ll which is disposed immediately beneath the rod and conforms to the transverse curvature thereot'. The arms 9 when it is desired to lock the elen'ient 10 to the turn buckle are bent outwardly as indicated at l2 to lie upon the upper edges of the arms (3 and 7, and -lrom said outwardly bent portions, the arms are bent downwardly to lie upon the outer faces of the arms (3 and T and are disposed in spaced relation to the portions between said arms.
It will be seen and appreciated upon reterenee to the foregoing description that I. provide a simple and novel torm ot' lock adapted to bc engaged with portions of a turn buckle and with one otI the rods thereof so as to hold the rods o'tl the turn buckle against casual rotation at'ter they have been adj usted. The construction is such that the arms 9 can be readily bent into U-t'orm should it be desired to remove the device entirely from the turn buckle to permit lt'nrther adjustment of the latter.
In the forni of my invention shown in Fig. it the rod 12 of the turn buckle 1.?) is provlded with a single groove la adapted upon one-halt turn or revolution ot' the rod to be brought into parallel relation with one ot' the arms 15 of said turn buckle. The locking device consists ot' an element or member formed from a single length of wire or rod and may be inserted so that a portion 16 is confined between one of the (i tl walls of the groove 14. and the inner face of one of the arms of the turn buckle. After this operation the terminal ends of the said wire are bent over the upper and lower edge portions of one of the arms 15 and the extremities or portions 17 lie outwardly of one of the arms 15 and are disposed in spaced relation to the intermediate portion 16.
In the form shown in Fig. 5 the rod 18 of the turn buckle is provided with a groove 19 which receives a portion 20 of a locking member or element 21. The locking member or element in this form of my invention is preferably formed from malleable wire of less gage than the wire or rod described in the previously referred to forms of my invention and this element or member is particularly adapted for use in connection with smaller turn buckles for lighter' work than the one shown in Fig. 1. The locking element 21 is provided with portions 22 which are bent around one of the arms of the yoke 24 and the terminal ends of the said portions are twisted together or otherwise brought into interlocking engagement with each other.
The form shown in Fig. 6 is substantially the same as that shown in Fig. 5, .the difference being in providing the rod 25 of the turn buckle 26 with a pair of grooves 27 similar to those described in the preferred form of my invention. The. locking element or member in this form of my invention is escasa identical with that described in Fig. 5 and it is thought that a description for one will suffice for both.
I claim 1. The combination with a turn buckle, of an adjustable grooved rod threaded to the nut members of the said turn buckle, and a locking member adapted for locking engagement with a portion of the yoke of the turn buckle and adapted to be seated in the grooved portion of said rod.
2. A turn buckle or the like comprising a yoke having a series of spaced arms, a rod adjustably connected with the yoke, said rod having a grooved portion, a locking member comprising a single piece of malleable metal adapted for lockinO' engagement in the said grooved portion o* the rod and adapted to be bent into engagement with the arms of said yoke.
3. A turn buckle or the like comprising a yoke having a revoluble rod connected therewith, said rod being provided with a plurality of grooves, and a rod locking element formed from a single piece of malleable metal bent to provide groove and yoke engaging portions.
