Specification of Letters Patent.

Appeoton led February 3,1305. Serial No. 4,113.
To a-ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, WILLIAM Simbel, ROBERT LAIDLAW SMITH, and CECIL Seniors WALKER, .ll subjects of the King ot Great Britain, residing at 11 Tothill street, `Westminster, in the county of London, England., have invented certain new und useful lmprovenients in Tiles or Slabs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tiles or slabs for use in uildinp; lire resisting doors, Wells, partitions and the/ like, composed of concrete or similar plastic Anieterisls reinforced with metal. When such tiles or slabs have been used for reinforced door constructions it has hitherto been proposed to mal-re them fiat and to suspend' them `by Ineens of einJ bedded and projecting metal clips from or supports extending between the usual girders etc, so as to form a permanent. centeringon which the concrete or other filling is laid. ln such cases the adhesion between the 'fiat tile und the illinlq is imperfect end the Yflooring is mainly suspended by the metal clips which may rust. lin some cases, :is permanent centerino between joins, tiles or slabs have been used having longitudinal inclined projections and lateral ribs and suspended by resting them on the flanges of the Joists.
The object of the present invention is to produce tiles or slabs for reinforced door, Wnll, and the like constructions which slabs have lateral ribs und inclined projections and are secured to the supporting bars by means of Wires embedded in und projecting from. the tiles or slabs, so as to temporarily secure they tiles in. position duringtbe time the concrelte filling is setting., after which.
the tile and the filling are keyed together und become homogeneous with the :supporting bars. l,
ln the linceompanying drawings Figure l is a section tukenon the line 1*1 of Fig. II, and Fig. Il. is :u plain of one of our iniproved fire-resisting'. tiles or slabs as used for 'loors; und Fig. lll is n vertical section of part of f1 floor showing the mode of using the improved tiles or slabs shown in Figs l and Il, the reinforcement ,1c seen in Fig. l being here omitted.
The seine letters of reference. Where they 4occur are used to denote the saine or corredrawings.
crete or other plastic lire-resisting material cast in o mold et actony end then sent out as required to the place. Where the constructionnl Work is to be done. l l
in the form shown, the 'tilev oe sieh is east with inclined rejections o which extend longitudinally ii'oni. end, to end. .es shown inl Fig H and 'with transverse ribs which project laterally from the inclined. proies tions a and ou. both sides tliereolY :it suitable distances `Wher`e the tile or elebaisprovided with. more than one inclined pro jection a, ss in the exemple shown. in Fighe. l and 'll where two such inclined' projections site shown formed on the tile or s ab', the iste-cal l) o* the two inclined projections irre enst in line, and e space c left between the contiguous ribs ust suiicientl Y wide to :idmit the metal bars ci forniingr'tlie sti'lien ine` members of the floor, on which bars the tiles or slabs are to suspended.
Cast in With the concrete when the tile or slab is molded is s length of Wire e having tile with the ends ot Wires projecting.
through the ribs; and the Wires may be s e curediotherwise than by casting in the tile; or slab.
yThe mode Yof building a door with our improved tilesor slabs will now be understood. The" bars d ni'erst placed in posi.- tion on the bearings at the ends of the spain, and e tile 0,1; slab is passed'up from underneath with the space C into which lits the our (Z, whereupon the ends e of twocontiguous Wires e are twisted together over the top of the'bar d, as shown. at e2 in Fig. HI, und the tile or slabthus temporarily secured to 'the bar d; the bnr d being also held firmly in position' by the Wires-e end by the ribs l).
, homogeneous structure.
The y'next tile is 'passed nii and similarly secured until the ceiling construction iscom' pleted, whereupon concrete or other plastic material is rammed into t e desired height to make the floor. 'The projections are inclined and so disposed that when in situ, as shown in Fig. Hl, they inclose between them' a` space such es g 'thereby providing an undercut recesslinto which the lilling f Will enter-and take a substantial hold such as to malte the filling tile or slab a practically As shown inFig. I 'each tile or slab is- {Jroyided with e projection h extending ongitndinally along one edge and with a corresponding rabbet j along the other edge so that 'when placed in position the projec-` tion L of one tile engages in the rabbet j in the next orniin a rabbeted joint. The tile or slab shown is provided, at about the middle thickness of the base, with on inset of Wire gauze, Wires interlaced or crossed, expanded nietaly or other suitable metal fabric adapted to form a key for the plastic material and serving to reinforce the tile or slab at the bese; but this metal reinforce: ment is not part of our invention and may 'be dispensed with.'
Having fully' described om' invention,-
what We claim.l and desire to secure by Letters Patent is j 1. A fire-resisting tile or slab for door constructions provided on one face with longitudinal inclined projections, and ribs extending transversely of the tile and intersecting t e longitudinal projections, and securing wires embedded in the tile underneath the lribs and lon itudinally of the same and having'their en s projecting at the rear of the tile.
2. A lire-resisting tile or slab for floor constructions provided on one face with longitudinal inclined projections, and ribs extending transversely of the tile andinterseating the longitudinal projections, and securin wires threaded through holes made in the Vti es underneath the ribs and longitudinally of the same, the ends of the wires projecting at the rear of the tile.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto r set our hands in presence of t'w`o subscribing witnesses this 24th da of January 1908.
