Description

ERNEST KRONER, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.-
BONDED CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST KRoNnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of MIultnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bonded Concrete Constructions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bonded concrete constructions, and has for its object to produce a construction of this nature which will produce a wall, for example, made of hollow tile, and not requiring the necessity of a veneer of brick or plaster.
To these ends the invention consists in providing a coursed joint, and at the same time, a tile finish between concrete or clay blocks, while a horizontal reinforcement is had by means of a bond plate made in one or more pieces with reinforcing rods passin through the central portions of the plate and blocks which are filled with concrete, the whole presenting a finished exterior without the application of any surface treatment, and made entirely of cement or concrete and steel.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views:Figure 1 is a perspective View of a wall made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the parts shown in Fig. 1; and, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the parts shown n Fig. 1.
1 indicates any suitable burnt clay, concrete or cement hollow tile, or block, having a finished exterior 2, and adapted to be placed over other similar blocks either by breaking the joint, as is usually done in laying brick, or in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1. Between the said hollow tile or blocks 1, I provide bond plates 3 also prefer ably having finished edges 4, and they are preferably made to break joint in horizontal layers as illustrated at 5, although they may be made to break joint immediately under the vertically disposed plates 6 which may be duplicates of the plates 3, or which may be solid, as illustrated at the right hand portion of Fig. 1. In order that a structure thus made may be reinforced I preferably place over contiguous bond plates 3 at suit- Specification of Letters Patent.

able intervals, metal or other plates, 8, and pass through the same one or more headed rods 7 which are permitted to extend down through a plurality of the hollow tile or blocks 1, as indicated. The said tile, or blocks, may then be filled with concrete or cement, and the said rods 7 may be flared at their lower ends 10, or otherwise suitably anchored in the concrete 11, as indicated. Further, the said bond plates 3 may be set in from the surfaces 2 of the tile, as indicated at 12 in Fig. 3, or they may be laid flush with said surfaces 2 as desired.
It will be recognized by those skilled in the art that it is exceedingly difficult to make a long vertical mortar joint between blocks, only about an inch thick, unless some such plate as my bond plates 3, or 6, are provided, when such oints become quite easy, and my said plates thereupon really serve to tie two blocks together. It will further be observed that an important advantage in my construction resides in the fact that it constitutes a system wherein finished tile may be built in and form a portion of a reinforced strong concrete wall without any danger at all of the same becoming displaced. In other words, a finished tile surfaced wall may be provided in large structures on this system as simply and as easily as unfinished reinforced walls. Further, no temporary forms or other such structures which are now usually employed in reinforced concrete constructions, are required, and therefore, a considerable saving is effected.
l Vhere structural steel supports are encountered in the construction, my concrete blocks, as well as plates, may be made in one or more pieces and set around such structures, so that the tile finish is had without further expense. Plates 6 may be dispensed with when desired, and any desirable form of reinforcing may be used. I prefer, however, to employ bent straps 8 either. straight or deflected as shown for horizontal reinforcements; and in the case of columns the vertical rods 7 may extend the entire length of the columns. But it is also evident that in same cases no reinforcements will be required as for example in walls extending between columns.
What I claim is 1. In a concrete construction, the combination of a plurality of hollow tile finished blocks forming a wall; tile finished bond plates having openings therethrough located between the opposing surfaces of said blocks; solid tile finished plates located between opposing faces of said blocks and a concrete filling for said blocks and bond plates, substantially as described.
2. In a concrete construction, the combination of a plurality of hollow tile finished blocks forming a Wall; tile finished bond plates having openings therethrough located between the opposing surfaces of said blocks; reinforcing plates overlying oontiguous bond plates; a filling for said blocks and plates; and reinforcing material passing through said reinforcing plates and embedded into the filling substantially as clescribed.
