BELT-LACING.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABIRAM J. SLONECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Grundy and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Belt-Lacing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to belt lacing and its object is to provide means whereby the connected ends of a belt can be separated without the necessity of disturbing the thongs used for lacing purposes.
Another object is to provide lacing which can be very quickly adjusted and which does not require the use of long thongs as heretofore.
Another object is to provide a lacing having the strains distributed equally throughout the lengths thereof, said lacing forming a flexible hinge without increasing the thickness of the belt at the point of connection.
A still further object is to provide lacing which permits the belt to be properly adjusted prior to being placed on a line of shafting.
lVith these and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lacing, the thongs being shown in the positions assumed by them when the parts are secured together, the belt and the key being shown by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the end portions of the belt, the thongs, and the key, the two belt ends being shown separated.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference A designates a belt having outer and inner rows of apertures 1 and 2 respectively adjacent each end thereof, there also being a slit 3 adjacent one of the longitudinal edges of the belt and near the apertures.
One lacing thong is provided for each end of the belt. Each thong, which has been indicated by the numeral 4, has a slit 5 cutin one end, said end being inserted through one of the end apertures 1. The thong is then looped around the end of the belt and inserted through the slit and passed thence through the adjoining openlng 2, after which it is extended along diagonal lines to the next opening 1, from which it is looped around the end of the belt and brought back to the adjoining opening 2, this arrangement being followed throughout the width of the belt, the end of the thong being finally passed from the end opening 2 and through the slit 3 so as to leave a free tongue 6. It will thus be seen that several loops will be provided beyond the end of the belt. Both ends of the belt are provided with a thong threaded therethrough in this manner, the loops on one end of the belt however being so arranged that when the two ends are brought together said loops will project between those on the opposite end of the belt. This arrangement has been clearly indicated in Fig. 1. After the two sets of loops have thus been brought together as shown in Fig. l a key 7 preferably in the form of a round pin is inserted through the loops, said pin being provided at its ends with openings 8 through which the tongues 6 are designed to be inserted, these tongues thus serving to prevent longitudinal displacement of the key. The ends of the tongues can then be inserted between the various loops of the thongs so as to be held out of the way.
It will be understood that whenever it is desired to uncouple the ends of the belt it is merely necessary to unfasten the key 7 and withdraw it from the loops formed by the thongs. It will be seen therefore that the belt can be laced upon the floor and subsequently placed upon the shafts and its ends then fastened together by inserting the key through the registering loops. Attention is directed to the fact that those portions of the thongs which bear upon the pulleys extend in the direction of the length of the belt and therefore they are rendered more lasting than where they are extended along diagonal lines.
By providing a lacing such as herein described it is only necessary to use short thongs which can be very quickly placed in positlon, the arrangement of the loops being such as to cause the equal distribution of all strains throughout the lengths of the thongs.
What is claimed is 1.
