BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BROCK, OF QUAY, TERRITORY 0F NEW MEXICO.
HASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1910.
Application filed May 17, 1909. Serial No. 496,470.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BnNJAMiN F. BROCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quay, in the county of Quay and Territory of New lS/IeXico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I'Iasps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in hasps, and the object thereof is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be used as a hasp, or as a catch hook, and which may be maintained in a raised position out of engagement with its keeper when so desired.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hasp in position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the hasp.
In the embodiment of my invention, as shown, I provide a hasp comprising a body 1 which, adjacent its forward end, is provided with an integral tongue 2, formed by cutting through the material on three sides thereof, which tongue is bent rearwardly and inwardly to provide a handle, and forms the keeper engaging slot 3. The body 1 also has a hook, embodying an outstanding lip i, extending from its lower longitudinal edge, and alined with the center of slot 3. rIhe body 1 is also provided, adjacent its rear end with opposing sections of its material struck up therefrom to form bolt head inclosing walls 5 and 6. Between its ends, and between tongue 2 and the walls 5 and 6, body 1 has a depending extension 7 upon its lower edge, and atransverse slotl 8, the lower end of which lies within said eXtension 7, and is provided with an angular extremity 9.
To accommodate my improved hasp, a door to which it is to be connected, is provided with a bracket 10 secured thereto, to receive the rear end of body 1 and of substantially greater width than said body, and is also provided, between said bracket and its longitudinal edge, with a horizontal slot 11, through which an operating bolt 12 eX- tends, said bolt being provided with an outer headed end 13 projecting between the walls 5 and 6 of said body, and with a wingnut 14 secured upon its inner end whereby it may be rotated, and said body swung upwardly or downwardly and moved longitudinally. The door may also be provided with an outwardly projecting headed stud 15 proj ecting therefrom for engagement through the body slot 8, whereby when body 1 is swung upwardly, it may be moved longitudinally rearwardly to project stud 15 within the lower angular end 9 of said slot and thus maintain said body out of contact with its keeper which, as usual, is in the form of a staple 16 secured to the door casing, to project through slot 3, when the device is used as a hasp, and to receive the lip 4 downwardly therein, when it is used as a catch hook, said staple 16 having a dividing web, forwardly of which the padlock is coupled in the first named use.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my improved hasp may be operated from the outside by using handle 2, or from the inside by manipulating bolt 12.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A hasp comprising a body having a longitudinal tongue struck out therefrom to provide a keeper receiving slot, said tongue being curved back thereupon, and constituting a handle therefor.
2. A hasp comprising a swingingly mounted longitudinally movable body provided with an intermediate transverse slot having an angular extension slot at one end, for the reception of a door carried stud to maintain said body out of engagement wit-h a keeper.
3. A hasp comprising a body having a longitudinal tongue struck out therefrom to provide a keeper receiving slot, and with an extension upon its lower edge to engage said keeper in its raised position, said tongue being curved back upon said body, and constituting a handle to facilitate the moving thereof.
et. In a device of the character described, the combination with a door provided with a horizontal slotted opening, of a hasp body having a keeper receiving slot adjacent one end, and a keeper engaging hook below said slot, and provided adjacent its opposite end In testimony whereof I aix my signa ture, 1n presence of two Witnesses.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BROCK.
with portions of its material struck out- Wardly therefrom, and a bolt projecting through said door opening and provided with an outer headed end housed Within said struck out hasp portions, whereby said hasp I witnesses:
body may be manipulated from the inside LiNToN D. HUNT, and outside. THos. B. BUCKNER.
