To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, F REDERIOK W. DON- NING, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Machines and Cases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to cigarette rolling machines, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a portable machine having comparatively few parts easily and quickly assembled; second, to provide a machine that can be carried in the coat pocket and used when it is desired to roll. a cigarette; third, to provide a small cigarette machine that will be simple in construction, strong and durable, and easily manipulated to form a cigarette, and fourth, to furnish a portable cigarette machine with a tobacco and paper magazine that will permit of numerous cigarettes being rolled without the machine being replenished. These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by a machine having a novel device for forming a piece of paper into a roll adapted to receive tobacco during its formation, the machine having a simple cutting device for severing the cigarette after it has been formed into a desired length.

The machine will be hereinafter considered more fully in detail and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated what I believe to be a practical embodiment of the invention; but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed, as to size, shape and manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings :Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a machine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view. Fig. 4 is a plan of a portion of a detached cutting device. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of a detached forming device. Fig. 6 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the machine, and Fig. 7 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the same.

2 and 3. Hinged to the rib 2 at the rear side of the casing 1 is an oval lid or cover 41 adapted to fit upon the upper edges of the casing 1 and engage the rib 2. Hinged to the rib 3 at the rear side of the casing is another lid or cover 5 similar to the lid or cover 4:, said lid or cover forming the top of the casing while the lid or cover 5 forms the bottom thereof.

In the lower end of the casing 1 is arranged a horizontal partition, comprising side walls 5 end walls 6, inclined walls 7, and a horizontal central raised portion 8, the central raised portion 8 being connected to side walls 5*, and to the end walls 6 by the inclined walls 7. The central raised portion 8 adjacent to one of the side walls 5 is provided with a longitudinal slot 9, and adjacent to the inclined walls 7 with parallel hangers 10. These hangers are provided with a dptachable pin 11 for a revoluble roll of cigarette paper 12, which is adapted tp pass upwardly through the longitudinal 5 0t 9.

In the upper end of the casing 1 is mounted a horizontal partition 13 having a central opening 141 for a forming device, comprising an inverted funnel 15 having the lower end thereof resting upon the side walls 5 of the lower horizontal partition. The upper end of the funnel extends into a horizontal cutter plate 16 carried by two cutter frames 17, said frames being supported by the horizontal partition 13. The cutter plate 16 is provided with a central opening 18 to receive the upper end of the forming device, and said plate and the upper end of said device are rounded off to conform to the curvature of the frames 17, which are substantially circular to accommodate a curved knife-blade 19. The frames 17 are channel-shaped in cross section with the open sides of said channel-frames confronting one another to receive the edges of the blade 19 and serve functionally as guides for said blade. The blade is provided with a cutting edge 20 and with a suitable knob 21 to facilitate the movement of said blade when the lid or cover 4: is opened.

The upper end of the forming device is provided with oppositely disposed openings 22 for a purpose that will presently appear.

The space between the horizontal partitions and the side walls of the casing 1 constitutes a reservoir or magazine 23 for tobacco and tobacco is admitted to said reservoir through the medium of an opening 24 provided therefor in the horizontal partition 13. This opening is surrounded by a sleeve 25 normally closed by a cap 26.

To place the machine in an operatable condition, the paper from the roll 12 is carried upwardly in the forming device 15, and the shape of this device tends to roll and form the paper into a tube with the longitudinal edges of the paper overlapping. The tube is gradually formed as the paper is carried upwardly within the forming device, and it is during this movement of the paper that tobacco from a reservoir 23 enters the form ing device and is wrapped in the tube. During this operation the machine is held at an inclination that will cause the tobacco to feed by gravity into the forming device, and by gripping the tube through the openings 22, it can be raised in the forming device. It is then preferable to twist the outer end of the tube to prevent tobacco from falling out of said tube, and then the formation of the cigarette can be continued until a cigarette of a desired length has been projected from the forming device. During this operation the overlapping edges of the paper forming the cigarette can be moistened, or this can be accomplished after the blade 19 has been shifted to sever the formed cigarette from that portion remaining in the forming device.

It will of course be understood that all this is accomplished while the lid or cover 4 is open, and it is obvious that with both lids or covers open the machine can be easily stocked with makings or material for producing cigarettes.

The machine is made of light and durable metal and the exterior thereof finished and ornamented to present a neat appearance. Besides preventing the waste of tobacco, considerable time is saved that is otherwise spent in performing the tedious operation of rolling the cigarette, particularly when granular tobacco is used.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A machine of the type described, comprising a casing, hinged lids carried by the ends of said casing, a horizontal partition arranged in the lower part of said casing and having a central raised portion provided with a slot, a revoluble roll of paper supported by said partition and adapted to have the paper thereof passed upwardly through said slot, a horizontal partition located in. the upper end of said partition, a forming device supported by the first mentioned partition and extending upwardly through the last mentioned partition and adapted to form the paper of said roll into a tube with the edges thereof overlapping, said partitions forming a tobacco reservoir within said casing, the last mentioned partition having an opening formed therein adapted to admit tobacco to said reservoir, and a cutting device supported by the last mentioned partition for severing a formed cigarette withdrawn from said forming device.

A machine of the type described, comprising a casing, hinged lids carried by the ends of said casing, a horizontal partition arranged in the lower part of said casing and having a central raised portion provided with a slot, a revoluble roll of paper supported by said partition and adapted to have the paper thereof pass upwardly through said slot, a horizontal partition located in the upper end of said partition, a

forming device supported by the first mentioned partition and extending upwardly through the last mentioned partition and adapted to form the paper of said roll into a tube with the edges thereof overlapping, said partitions forming a tobacco reservoir within said casing, the last mentioned partition having an opening formed therein adapted to admit tobacco to said reservoir, and a cutting device supported by the last mentioned partition for severing a formed cigarette withdrawn from said forming de vice, said device comprising guide frames, and a cutting blade movable with said frames and adapted to travel over upper end of said forming device.

3. A machine of the type described, comprising a casing, horizontal partitions located in said casing and providing a tobacco reservoir, a forming device arranged within said casing and extended upwardly through one of said partitions, a revoluble roll of paper supported by the other of said partitions and adapted to have the paper thereof pass upwardly through said forming device, and a cutting device supported by one of said partitions adjacent to the upper end of said forming device and adapted to sever the paper at the upper end of said forming device.

4:. A machine of the type described, comprising a casing, horizontal partitions located in said casing and providing a tobacco reservoir, a forming device located in said casing and extended above one of said partitions, a revoluble roll of paper arranged below the other of said partitions and adapted to have the paper thereof passed upwardly through said partitions into said forming device and to receive tobacco from said reservoir, and a cutting device carried by the other of said partitions to sever the paper above said forming device, said cutting device comprising guide frames and a curved cutting blade movably supported by said frames and adapted to move over the upper end of said forming device.

5. A pocket cigarette machine comprising a receptacle, a forming device arranged therein, a revoluble roll of paper at the bottom of said receptacle and adapted to have the paper thereof passed upwardly through said forming device means Within the receptacle for feeding tobacco into said forming device, and a cutting device supported at the upper end of said receptacle and adapted to sever the paper and tobacco Withdrawn from said forming device.
