STEAM FACE-BATH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
Application filed March 22, 1909. Serial No. 484,844.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SANFORD J. DALZELLE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Beaumont, in the county of Jefferson, in the State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Face-Baths, whereof the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive apparatus adapted for applying a vapor or steam bath to the face for improving the complexion and for other purposes.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings represents in part a vertical section of an apparatus embodying this invention and in part a side elevation thereof, showing in dotted lines a face inclosed in the flexible hood. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section of the apparatus on line 22 of Fig. 1, a portion of the water pan being broken out showing the alcohol receptacle beneath said pan. Fig. 3 represents on an enlarged scale a perspective view of the removable alcohol receptacle or cup. Fig. 4 represents on an enlarged scale a perspective view of a removable perforated ring which serves the double purpose of suspending the alcohol cup and permitting air to pass into the com bustion chamber for supporting combustion.
This apparatus comprises, when constructed in the form shown, a portable hollow urnlike standard or pedestal 10, a tubular detachable metallic hood supported in said standard, a flexible hood secured to the outer end of said metallic hood, a perforated ring supported in said standard, an alcohol cup suspended in said ring and a water pan supported in the standard above the alcohol cup.
The standard 10 comprises a tapering tubular base 11, a flaring portion 15 extending upward from the top of said base and preferably integral therewith, and a cylindrical top 18 preferably integral with said flaring portion. The base 11 is provided preferably at or near its bottom with openings 12 for the admission of air to the interior of said base. These openings may be in the form of recesses cut in the lower edge of said base and forming feet 13 on which the base is supported. The base is provided at its top with an interior shoulder 14. The flaring portion 15 constitutes the combustion chamber and said chamber is provided in its side wall near its top with upper openings 16 for the escape of the gases of combustion and at its top with an inner shoulder 17 for supporting a water pan.
The metallic hood 20 comprises an upright cylindrical portion 21 adapted to fit closely within the cylindrical top 18 of the urn-like standard 10 and an upwardly inclined cylindrical portion 22 open at its upper end and provided with an exterior flaring flange 23. The inclined portion preferably tapers to its open end from its point of junction with the cylindrical portion 21.. The open upper end of the metallic hood is preferably disposed in an inclined or vertical plane.
The flexible hood 30 is composed of any suitable flexible fabric, such for instance as a textile fabric, rubber fabric or other suitable flexible material. This hood is preferably constructed in cape-like form open along its under side and having a neck 31 adapted to fit around the open end of the metallic hood 20. The neck 31 is designed to button around the upper end of the metallic hood 20 below the flaring flange thereof, said flaring flange holding the hood in place and tending to spread it as clearly shown in Fig. 1. This neck is provided with any suitable fastening device, such for instance as a glove fastener 32.
A detachable ring 40 is adapted to fit over the top of the base 11 and rests on the shoulder 14 thereof, serving as a means of suspension for the alcohol cup, and provided with perforations 41 which admit air from the hollow base 11 into the combustion chamber 15 for supporting combustion.
The alcohol cup 50, preferably of cylindrical form and adapted to fit within the ring 40, is provided at its upper edge with an outturned flange 51 or other suspension means engaging said ring. The cup 50 is supported by any suitable means in the upper contracted portion of the ventilated base or chamber 11. and said cup forms a narrow or annular flue between itself and the wall of said chamber at the contracted portion of the latter.
The water pan ()0 is suspended within the combustion chamber 15. The pan is provided with an outturned flange 61 or other supporting means, which rests on the shoul der 17. The water pan is preferably provided with a handle 62 which may be composed of one or more bowed cross straps of sheet metal connected at their opposite ends to the flange 61 of the pan.
In the use of this apparatusassuming that the parts are disconnected the ring 10 is first placed in position on the shoulder 1 1 Within the urn-like standard 10. Then the alcohol cup 50 is dropped through the ring 40 and held suspended therefrom by its flange 51. This cup is charged with alcohol, kerosene or other inflammable material. and the latter is ignited. Then the water pan 60 is placed within the standard 10, its flange 61 resting on the shoulder 17 and its body being suspended within the combustion chamber 15 above the alcohol cup 50. This pan is charged with water or other liquid to be vaporized. The metallic hood 20 is then adjusted by its lower cylindrical portion 21 within the cylindrical portion 18 of the standard 10. The flexible hood 30 is buttoned or otherwise attached to the upper open end of said hood. As the Water or other liquid becomes vaporized by the action of the heat developed by the combustion of the alcohol, the face of the person to be treated is placed near the open end of the metallic hood 20 and inclosed in the flexible hood 30 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. If desired the flexible hood 30 may be adjusted around any particular part of the face. The flexible hood holds the vapor in contact with the face or part thereof to be treated.
The central contraction of the standard or pedestal 10, the alcohol cup or receptacle located in said contraction and the flue thus formed between them, together with the upwardly flaring combustion chamber above and the downwardly flaring ventilated base below, tend to create a forced draft through said flue which gives a non-luminous hot flame with a small consumption of alcohol. The pedestal may be cast or spun from sheet metal or otherwise cheaply made, and the other parts easily adjusted therein.
This apparatus may be used for vaporizing medicated liquids for the treatment of diseases of the throat, lungs or nasal passages by the breathing in of such vapor while the hood incloses the face.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of a portable hollow standard comprising an upwardly tapering tubular ventilated base and a flaring combustion chamber surmounting said base and. communicating therewith, a cup for inflammable liquid suspended at the contracted upper part of said ventilating base and forming an air chamber between them, a pan for containing a vaporizable liquid suspended in said combustion chamber above i i l l i l l l l r l l l said cup and a hood connected with said standard.
2. The combination of a portable hollow standard comprising an upwardly tapering tubular ventilated base and a flaring combustion chamber surmounting said base and communicating therewith, said combustion chamber being provided with lateral openings in its wall for the escape of gases of combustion, a cup for inflammable liquid suspended at the contracted upper part of said ventilated base and forming an air chamber between them, a pan for containing a vaporizable liquid suspended in said combustion chamber above said cup, and a hood connected with said standard.
3. The combination of a hollow standard provided with shoulders one above the other, a perforated ring supported on the lower shoulder, a vaporizing pan supported on the upper shoulder, a cup for containing an inflammable liquid suspended in said rin and a rigid hood connected with the top of said standard.
