To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM Prr'rs RYLANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Marcos, in the county of Hays and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shutters and Ventilatore, of which the following is a specificationf My invention relates to improvements in shutters of the slatted type and has for its object to provide a shutter which may be used for ventilation alone, for ventilation and at the same time securing privacy, and finally to produce a shutter which may be so adjusted as to be practically a solid blind.
Vith these objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the `accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation of the inside of Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same showing the device used as a simple-ventilator.u Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing in full lines the device used to shut off air and light, and in dotted lines position of parts when used for ventilation, and at the same time shutting ofi' view from the outside. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the, slotted plate C yshowing the use of a closed slot.
In carrying out my invention I use a frame composed of side pieces A and the top piece A', within theframe are rigidly secured the transverse slats A2 extending from side to side. To the inner face of the side rails A are secured the strips A3 which project inwardly and serve to retain the movab e slatted frame composed of the side bars B, the top bar B and the central bar B2 allof which are rigidly attached to the slats 3 B3; as stated this supplemental frame, is
maintained within the main shutter frame by the overhanging'strips A3 on the side rails of said main shutter. y
At about the center of cent-ral bar B2, a slot B4 is cut and in this slot a transverse pin B5 is secured and Vover the slotted portion a metal housing B is placed being secured to the central'bar B2 by screws and serving as a hand piece to operate the movable shutter.
Secured to the main shutter at about its center is a thin vertical metal plate C, said plate projectin into the slot B4 and having the diagonal s ot c opening into a curved slot o', said slot c meeting a horizontal slot c2 which extends to the free ed e of the plate C; the outer end of the curve slot c forms a seat c3 to receive the pin B5 when the movable slat is in its position to totally shut off light and air andthe other end of the curved slot is depressed below its junction with the straight horizontal slot to form another seat c4 for the pin B5, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. This improved shutter is designed to be primarily of a size covering the lower sash, and vwill be held in place in the window frame by tongue and roove or stops so that it can be raised out o the way and fastened when it is desired to dispose of the' shutter or blind temporarily for any reason.
The movable or supplemental shutter frame may beremoved from the main frame by removing one of the facing strips A3 and then bring the movable shutter to the` rposition indicated by dotted linesin Fig. 3.
`It will be noticed that the shutter is composed of two main parts, a stationary shutter and a movable and adjustable slatted frame.
By reason of the shape of the slots which communicate, three positions of the -slats with relation to each other are possible; thus when it is desired to give free ventilation, the. hand piece is manipulated to cause the pin'B5- toseat itself at the bottom of the diagonal slot c as shown in Fig. 2 so that the slats of movable part lie closely alongside the slats of the stationary part or meinber the open spaces of each registering; this adjustment gives light and ventilation to the room. v

As indicated at the outset of the foregoing description it is plain that my ,invention is designed Vto be an' effectual inside shutter or blind, preferably of a size to cover the lower sash of window only, the upper sash needing no blind since it may be covered by the ordinary shade which is better adapted to furnish abundant sun-light so necessary for health and comfort, but which is rendered perfectly useless as a blind or screen for the lower half of window, when the lower sash is raised, even when gentle breezes blow.
The passing of the old style` outside roll slat shutters from modern house building, as shown by the many lpublications of the foremost architeetsof the dayfjhas created a demand for a simple, cheaply manufac-v tured and yet strongly and compactly constructed shutter and ventilator, which may be readily manipulated by any one, even by a child after ,having once been instructed as to its operation.
' Thus it will be seen that by the. use ofmy improved shutter and ventilatorI perfect privacy can be had. in a room without cutting off ventilation, and thorough ventilation can be had with the shutter presenting the appearance of a solid blind. This position of the blind and ventilator makes it specially adapted to be used in rooms when a free cir- -culation of air is desired but when a draft is to be avoided.
