Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
WILLIAM H. KENNARD, JR., OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVED WINDOW-SHUTTER.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent NO. 49,632, dated August 29, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KENNARD, J r., of the city and county of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have made new and useful Improvements in Inside Shutters 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, const-ruction, and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying; drawings, which make part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the shutter. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same in the line ma', Figzl. Fig. 3 is a detached sectional View of the leaf.
The same letters refer to corresponding parts in the different figures.
My invention consists in making a hinged panel to the frame which constitutes a portion ot' the hinged shutter, providing the said section of shutter with a door for the admission of light; and it further consists in the method ot' making the said shutter or section of shut- 4 ter of a single piece of wood strengthened by end buttons and dowels, with the requisite opening, made by grooving the face and rabbeting the rear of the orice for the hinged panel to shut into.
To enable one skilled in the art to manufacture my invention, I will proceed to describe it in detail.
The shutter is made in such lengths as may be required, according to the height and proportions of the window. It also, while usually made to open toward both window-jambe, is not limited by the number ot'sections ot which it is composed. With these preliminary re marks I may proceed to describe it by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which itis represented as consisting of eight shutters, the pairs, which each occupy halfof the vertical height of the window, folding back against the jambs.
Each shutter is composed of aframe, A,and one or more panels, B, which are hinged to the said frame, and are provided with a catch or latch, by which they are secured thereto.
The shutterA, or section ofshutterA,7 asit may be called, I prefer for economys sake to form in one piece, with battens O O at the end for stiffening and strengthening, and with a dowel-pin, D, which passes through the central portion, betweenthe two openings E, which are made by sawing out a portion of the piece A.
The openings have a molding finish on one side, which constitutes an ornament to the edge ofthe opening, while on the other is a rabbet, into which the panel-door B shuts, so as to make it about tlush with the surface ofA on the side to which it is hinged.
The hinges F and catch G secure the panel to the shutter, and the portions or leaves of shutter are folded into each other and then'back against thejambs, moving on their hinges H.
The surfaces ofthe respective parts may be ornamented in any style required, and the leaves of the shutters may be built up, as usual in panel doors or shutters, of stoles and battens, the panels being hinged thereto, as described.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The shutter provided with a hinged panel, as herein described, as an article of manufacture.
The above speciiication of my improvement in inside shutters signed this 27th day of June, 1865.
