METALLIC LEAF FOR ACCOUNT-REGISTERS.
Specification of letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
Application filed December 522, 1906. Serial No. 138,817.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK Momt-n'r, a
i attach. My invention provides for a trans- Which a series of pivoted sheet metal leaves are used on which the slips or meinoranda are cli ped or otherwise attached, and par' ticular y it relates to a novel form of sheet. metal leaf or page, as it may be called, such asis used for this class of account registers, and to means of reinforcing the bottom edge of the leaf and pivotally attaching the leaf to a base or to the next succeeding lea'l.
The object of my invention is to straighten the leaf or page laterally in order to prevent its bending at its middle, to provide a means for the easy attaehmentof a hinge or pivot, and incidentally, to permit both sides of the leafor page being used, and means whereby.
the sheets when hinged iri'conjunction with each'other, may be rolled upon the other in the act of opening one sheet.
My invention consists in forming the bot tom edge of the leaf with a roll or bead reinforced by an inwardly turned flange or marginal portion and using in connection therewith end lugs which close the ends of the bead or rol and have hinge pintles attached thereto.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of two conjoined leaves of an account re ister. emb dying my invention; Fig. 2 is a ragmentaiy cross section through the leaf at its butt end; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a transverse section of Fig. at rightangles to Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the closing plugs.
In the drawings, 3 designates a sheet or leaf of an account-keeping book or register, such as are quite connntmly employed for keeping credit accounts. These sheets are ordinarily provided with clips or like dc vices in which the credit accounts are held, and the sheets are st rengthcned by longitudinal strips of wood or metal, extending from the butt of the sheet to the edge thereof. The sheet. has also been strengthened by transversebars of metal, but these transverse bars are clumsy, are heavy and are difficult to verse strengthening portion of the teat which shall be light, formed in one piece with the sheet or lca'l itself, and 'n'ovidos also for the attachment of the hinges-as hclore described.
In the drawing-., the .-;lli'l'lglll(lllflg ribs of wood are designated l. These are attached in any suitable manner on o lpositc sides of each sheet. The clips which are to he attached to these sheets are not shown, for they form no part of my invention, and any form of clip may be usct'l if desired.
The inner or hutl end of my improved at the butt edge sheets or pages is bent around to .torm a cylinder or tubular bead o, projecting equally on either side of the sheet, as shown in section in Fig. 15. The edge of the sheet is also provided wit it an inwni'tlly=hent margin which acts as a strengtheningllange and also permits the roll to he very easily made, the straight, margin affording a means whereby the edge or the leaf may be grasped and turned around a mandrel in a manner well known in the art.
The ends ot the flange (5 are cut away as at 7, to permit the introduction of a eylin drical metal plug, 8, into each end or the cylinder, this plug being attached to the head in any suitable manner, but preferably as shown, by a rivetl), extending through the plug and head, the rivet having the further function of preventing the head from spreading open. To the plug is preferably attached a link 10, this link being rigid, as
by soldering, with the plug and having at its end a perforation 11 for engagement with a pintle 19 ot' the next adjacent plug. The pintle may be formed in any desired manner and l have shown it as a screw inserted into the end of the plug and having a head engaging oiitside the link.
\Vhilo l have devised my improved leaf o. page nirticularly with a view to its application in accountdumping systems or registers oit' thev class described, I do not wish to be limited thereto. as it is obvious that the principle ol' the construction may be equally \\'t'll applied to leaves of the same character wed in analogous positions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination of a pluralit of leaves each formed with a. longitudinal iead, plugs disposed in the ends of each head and of the beads being open links at the ends of the beads, and means disposed in. the open ends of the beads for connecting the links with the beads-to form hinged connections for the leaves.
3. In anaccount register of the class de' scribed, a leaf of metal having a hollow tubular reinforcing bead at its edge, said bead having in .its lnterior a transverse flange extending alongthe bed longitudinally thereof, a link at each end of the bead,
and devices secured to the links and rigidly fastened on the ends of the beads for securing the links thereto.
4. In an account register of the character described, a leaf of metal having a reinforcing bead at its edge formed by turning the metal of the leaf into a. roll or cylinder, the edge of said metal at the roll being bent to form a flange cutting the diameter of said roll and extending along its length, and devices attached to the ends of the bead and including means for connecting the leaf with an adjacent leafi Y i 5. In an account register of the character g described, a leaf of metal having a tubular reinforcing head at its butt edge, said head being formed with a transverse flange crossing its diameter, plugs closing the ends of said tubular bead, rivets passing through the bead and plugs for securing the latter in the margin of said metal. being formed into a and extending longitudinally thereof nearly to its ends, the ends of said bead being closed by cylindrical plugs rigid therewith and contacting with the end of the flange, said plugs being provided with projecting links rigidly attached thereto, pivots on the plugs for connection with the links of an adjacent leaf, and means on the links-for connection with the pivots of an adjacent leaf.
,7. A leaf for account registers consisting of a sheet of metal. having a series of transverse dividing ribs on both faces of the sheet, the inner margin of said sheet being rolled to form a bead," and the inner edge of the sheet being formed to extend diametrically across said bead, and plugs closing the ends of said bead and provided with means whereby a leaf may be pivotally attached to another leaf.
