Be it known that we, ROBERT H. CURTIS,

, residing at Long Branch, county of Monend the object of the invention -is to provide a device of this general character of a `simple sind comparatively inexpensive nature, cn-

pable of convenient` ap lication to ergremoval from the hat, an presenting certa-in features of novelty and improvement, where? by4 the device is securely retained in position during use and 1s prevented from marring A the appearance of the hat itself or discomorting the wearer.

The Vinvention consists in certain novel features of the construction, and combina.- tions and arrangements of the several parts of the improved Het reducing device, whereby certain important advantages are attained, and the device is rendered simpler less expensive, and `otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be 'hereinafter fully set forth.

In these views, A represents the Crown of a hat to which we have shown our improved hat reducing device applied for use, and B sents the sweat bandof the hat.

D representsthe improved size reducing e brim thereof, while C repre-4 device as e. whole, said device being-constructed in the form of a thin, flexible, elongated. strip adapted to`be inserted and'held within the hat between the crown und sweat band thereof above the point wher'eet the 4sweat band is stitched to the hat,"so that the device is entirely concealed from view by the sweat band as will be readily understood.

.As shown in Fig. 3, the improved size reducing device comprises-a core or bodyfportion v10, which may be oonveniently'formed in one elongated strip or piece from-'some suitable thin exible material, such as steel, whalebone, Celluloid or the like, and a sheath Aor covering member l1, wherein said'fcoreor body portion 10 isV inclosed in such a way as to aiord a neat appeardiice-onnish to the device, and to preventv damage to the hat or its sweat band in case the core or body -portion should become corroded during use.

As herein shown, the sheath or covering memberis made in tubular formation-from knitted or woven materiel, but itV may obviously be'othe'rwise formed. For enample, said sheath or covering member may be made from rubber, leather or the like if desired. Where said sheath is formed from soft or yielding material, however, it 'affords a cushioned surface at its side next the sweat band, so as to prevent uncomfortable pressure upon the head of the wearer.

As indicated at 13 in Fig. 3, the edge of the core or body portion l0 of the device is notched or Cut at intervals along its length, and at said notches or cuts integral pointed spurs or project-ions are struck up therefrom,

as clearly seen at l2 in Fig. 3, andthese ointed spurs or projections are of suchpermit of being Conveniently slipped -over the elongated core or body portion, so es to house or inclose the seine as indicated upon l is of an extremely simple and com arativelf the drawings, and when thus applied, its extremities may be closed by cementing or otherwise, as indicated at 15 in Fig. 2, so as to prevent the' protrusion of the core or body 5- portion therefrom.

Where the improved device is formed from -resilient material, the inherent resili-` ency of such material will obviousl aid in Y retaining it in position within the liet, and

A size reducing device for hats consisting of a core or body portion of spring material, 'spurs projected outwardly therefrom,

and a covering member of yieldin material l a size reducing device for hats comprising a flat body portion or core of resilient material adapted to the inner face'of a hat crown', a covering member of pliable material for the body portionor core, and spurs that extend outwardly from the core or body portion and tlirougli said covering member.
