TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
Application filed April 29, 1909. Serial No. 492,907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVALTER L. Lori), a citizen of the United States of America, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.-`
This invention relates to toys, particularly adapted for advertising purposes, and the object thereof `is to mystify persons by causing or producing unexpected results in a simple device by the appearance of unlocked for matter at a given point and the disappearance of expected matter; a further object being to provide means whereby a given design, words, or the like may be moved from one position, by rotating a disk upon which the said design is arranged, into a different position, apparently, and maintain the said design right side up when a reversed appearance is expected; a further object being to so construct the device as to prevent a disclosure of the method of producing the mystifying results except by the destruction of the said device; a still further object being to provide a permanent design upon the iixed part of the device, and to so form the rotating disk, whereby the illusion is rendered still more perfect and unexplainable; and a still further object being to provide such devices which are simple in construction and operation and which are very inexpensive.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a front View of my, invention; Fig. 2 is a View thereof with the front removed; and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. l.
In the drawings forming a part of this application, I have shown a casing a composed of joined front and back plates a2 and e3, a recess at being provided at one side thereof, and in the front plate I provide two segmental, windows a and a, concentric with a blind pivot a which may be an ordinary eyelet or pin but which I prefer to print or otherwise impress upon the device, the latter method being much more economical and still producing the desired effect, and ad* jacent the windows I arrange a circle concentric therewith and of a width to extend beyond the recess a, said circle being shown at as.
Mounted between the front and back plates a2 and a is a disk pivotally secured to the latter at lf and at a slight distance below the blind pivot al, as clearly shown in all the figures, said disk being provided upon its periphery with a plurality of ratchet teeth for ease of disk rotation, and I make the arcs between the said teeth concentric with thc circle as to give the effect of a disk rotation concentric to the blind pivot al, although in reality it is eccentric thereto.
In the form shown, I nint two sets of words upon the disk b, ot which the set c and c2 is upright and the set Z and Z2 reversed, one set being a duplicate of the other and the elements of each set being arranged in arcs concentric with the pivot al but at like distances from the pivot ZF, thereby insuring the appearance of corresponding elements in the windows a and a in the two different disk positions and also insuring the same curvature of the said windows and the said elements.
If, from the position of the parts shown. the disk be rotated through an are ol' 1S() degrees, the element c passes beneath the front plate and the element d appears at the window a5, the element c2 also disappearing and being replaced by the element (Z2, thereby disclosing precisely the same matter in the windows as was disclosed in the initial disk position, and this result is produced in each rotation of the disk through an arc of ISO degrees and the elements are never shown bottom side up as would be expected under the belief that the disk is rotated upon the blind pivot a?.
In the form shown I also employ certain matter upon the front plate forming a context to the elements disclosed in the windows, this showing being preferred when my device is used for advertising purposes, but, when I intend the device as a toy, I may print pictures upon the disk of animals, vehicles, boats, airships, and the like, showing several thereof at each window with distinguishing means therebetween and in different positions at each window, whereby the effect of racing is produced, or I may also cause the mattei' on the disk to be a component part of a picture upon the front plate whereby the reversal of the parts at the said Windows is looked for, upon rotation of the disk, but never realized.
I may also produce mystifying results by employing di'erent colors upon the disk but it Will be understood that many modifications of the designs shown or suggested Will arise to suit the specic use of my invention, and many changes in the shape of the casing, and in the general construction, will also suggest themselves, and, reserving the right to myself of all such changes,
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :ei
l. A plate having a circle delineated thereon to represent a disk, and having' diainetrically opposite, concentric, curved, display openings Within said circle, and a disk pivoted in the rear of said plate and eccentrically of said circle and having diametrically opposite duplicate sets of texts, one element in each set being upside down and both so located as to come alternately opposite the display openings when turning the disk 18() degrees.
2. A plate having a circle delineated thereon to represent a disk, and having diametrically opposite, concentric, curved, display openings Within said circle, and a disk pivoted in the rear of said plate and eccentrically of saidrcircle and having diametrically opposite duplicate sets of texts, one element in each set being upside down and both so located as to come alternately opposite the display openings When turning the disk 180 degrees, and said plate having a text thereon to form a connected legible description With those on said movable disk.
3. A plate having a circle delineated thereon to represent a disk, and having diametrically opposite, concentric, curved, display openings Within said circle, and a disk pivoted in the rear of said plate and eccentrically of said circle and having diamet-rically opposite duplicate sets of texts, one element in each set being upside down and both so located as to come alternately opposite the display openings when turning the disk 180 degrees, and said plate having a finger aperture at one side thereof Whereby said disk may be rotated.
4L. A plate having a circle delineated thereon to represent a disk, and having diametrically opposite, concentric, curved, display openings Within said circle, and a disk pivoted in the rear of said plate and eccent-.rically of said circle and having diametrically opposite duplicate sets of texts, one element in each set being upside down and lboth so located as to come alternately opposite the display, openings when turning the disk 180 degrees, and said disk being provided With peripheral shoulders for manipulation and connected by contours of substantially the curvature of the circle on the plate and of such a lengtlras to display but one at a time at the edge of said plate, said contours being concentric with said circle.
5. A plate having a false pivot delineated thereon and having diametrically opposite display openings equidistant from said false pivot, and a disk pivoted at the rear of said plate and nearer one of said openings than the other, said disk having diametrically opposite texts so located as to be simultaneously visible at said display openings at the end of each complete disk rotation of 360 degrees, only.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 26th day of April 1909.
