G. H. JOHNSON I SPELLING PUZZLE OR GAME Filed July 11, 1923 ATTORNEY;
Patented Oct. 6, 1925.
UNETEEE STATE-S GEORGE HARRISON JoHNson,
OF TOTTENVILLE, NEW YORK.
SPELLING- PUZZLE OR GAME.
Application filed July 11, 1923.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon Hnmnson JoHNsoN, a subject of the King of England, residing at Tottenville, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spelling Puzzles or Games, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to puzzles and games and more particularly to a novel and improved block or counter-moving puzzle wherein a plurality of confined letters may be shifted from an arbitrary arrangement to complete the spelling of an arbitrary word such as a proper name.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a puzzle consisting of a casing or container provided with a plurality of blocks or counters each having a letter thereon, the purpose of the game being to shift the various letters, one at a time to their respective positions, so as to complete the aelling of a name.
Another object of my invention is the provision of what l term a political game or puzzle wherein a plurality of blocks or counters are confined within the container or casing, one side of the block or counters being lettered, Republican party and the opposite and reverse side of the counter being lettered, Democratic party, both sides of the blocks or counters being differently colored and affording amusement and a certain amount of ingenuity in quickly moving the counters from an arbitrary or scattered position to a regular place within the container so as to spell the name of the particular party.
I accomplish the above objects and others which will be more readily understood and appreciated when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings showing a preferred embodiment of my invention, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view showing the container and the blocks or counters arranged so as to complete the spelling of the proper name, Republican party.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the letters arranged indiscriminately and the party emblem removed.
Figure 3 is a similar View to Figure 1 showing the reverse side of the counters.
Figure 4 is a sectional view through the Serial No. 650,963.
casing or container within which the counters are positioned.
Figure 5 is a cross section through one of the counters, orblocks.
Figure 6 is a face view of one of the counters showing the raised letters.
Figure 7 is a reverse side view of said counter.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 5 designates any conventional container or casing provided with a hinged cover 6, which may be swung backwardly on the hinge 7 so as to permit access to the blocks or coun ters. Within the container, I provide a piece of celluloid 8 or other smooth surface, whereon the blocks or counters 9 may be moved from one position to another. In Figure 1, for instance, the counters on which the letters spelling the word, Republican appear, are preferably colored red, as indicated by Figure 6 and the letters spelling the word Party are colored green as indicated by numeral 10 of Figure 1. The blank counter 11 or party emblem completes the set and this counter is removed from the cas ing when it is desired to move the respective letters from the arbitrary position, as shown by Figure 2, to that shown by Figure l of the drawings. It will thus be seen that only one counter can be moved at a time and con siderable ingenuity and patience is required in order to be able to properly shift the blocks from one position to another in order to complete the proper spelling of the word. The reverse side of the counters completes the spelling of the proper name, Democratic party, the letters of the proper name, Democratic being preferably green, as indicated by Figure 7 and the letters of the word Party are preferably red so as to correspond therewith. In order to more easily grip the blocks or counters by the fingers, the respective letters are preferably raised but I do not wish to be limited or restrictedto the particular manner in which letters appear on the blocks or counters because they may be printed. stamped or placed thereon in any arbitrary manner as manufacturing necessities may require.
Of course, it will be readily understood that many other proper names may be utilized to accomplish the samepurpose, but I have particularly chosen the proper names,
Republican party and Democratic party,
since the said names contain 15 letters and form a perfect square When the party 5 emblem is added.
*laving shown and described my invention, What 1 claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is A puzzle or game comprising a container and a plurality of blocks having raised let- 10 ers and colored differently on each side to designate proper names, said blocks being: movable one at a time to different arbitrary positions \tithin the said container to complete the spelling of the proper name.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signa ture.
GEORGE HARRISON JOHNSON. [L.s.]
