TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 20, 1909.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Serial No. 491,145.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, I-Ltnnr T. 'lnmnun, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iit-tsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved toy or picture device, which when supplemented by a portion of the hand produces a complete picture, and it comprises a thin sheet of material, such as tin, paper, leather, etc, havin an opening of peculiar shape with a lateral cross-bar, the ex osed side of said sheet being darkened or blackened to form a contrast with the hand of the operator, and the invention further consists of the certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved toy, the same being constructed and arranged in ac cordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing a portion of the hand or knuckles to produce the likeness of an old woman. lig. is a perspective view of a closed hand showing the fingers and thumb to produce the likeness when supplemented with the device.
To put my invention into practice, I revide a thin sheet of suitable material, sue l as leather, paper, metal, ctc., which may be either flexible or rigid, in the latter case, said sheet is bent or formed artially to the contour of the front of a c osed hand, such as shown at Fig. 3 of the drawings. Formed at the center of the sheet 1, is an opening of peculiar form, being practically an inverted pear-shape, divided aterally at its greatest diameter by a bar 4 leaving a segmental opening 2 at the top and an inverted bells 1a e opening 3 below. This bar is formed wit 1 a circular part 5, on which may be printed or otherwise placed representations of eyes. The entire outer or exposed surface of the sheet 1 is darkened with paint or other suitable material in order that a strong contrast may be made between the color of the device and that of the hand of the operator.
In operation the hand is closed tightly as at i ig. 3 of the drawings, in which it will be noticed that the end of the thumb Sprotrudes slightly from between the middle lingers 7 and 0. When the hand is brought to this position the sheet is placed over the front of the same, care being taken to bring the bar 4 between the first or index linger 6, and that 7 adjacent, thereby producing the resemblance to the features of a very old woman, and if the operator slightly moves the thumb in and out, at the same time giving a corresponding slight movement to the two fingers 8 and 9 inclosing the same, varying expressions of the features may be obtained.
It will be noticed that the knuckles represent prominent parts of the featires. The first knuckle represents the forehead, the next 7 the nose, the thumb S a part of the tongue and the next 9 the chin.
This device while described as a toy may be used for an advertising medium, as business cards may be printed on the front or back face of the sheet.
Various slight modifications and changes may be made in the details of construction, such as the contour of the opening, or the printed representation of the eyes omitted, or movable eyes may be substituted in place of printing without departing from the spirit of the invention. 'lherefore I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction, shown and described, but wish to claim all such modified forms as would come properly within the general scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is:--
1. A toy comprising a sheet of plate having an approximately pear-shaped opening formed therein, and transverse bar arranged across the same.
2. A toy comprising a sheet or plate having an approximately pear-shaped opening formed therein, a transverse bar arranged across said opening, said bar having circular portions to represent eyes.
3. A toy comprising a sheet or plate having an. approximately pear-shaped opening formed therein, a transverse bar arranged across said opening, circular portions on said her, and printed representations of eyes placed on said circular portions.
4. A toy comprising a sheet or plate, having an approximately pear-shaped opening 5 formed therein, and a transverse be]? arranged across the same, said sheet or plate having a darkened exposed surface.
