BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1910.
Application filed November 14, 19Q8. Seria1 No. 462,605.
110 on whom 'lt may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND S. J. CHILD, a citizen of the United States of America, and a,resident of the city and county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 111 Boxes, of which the following is a specif cation.
My invention relates to folding boxes,
and the object of my invention is to provide a collapsible folding box adapted to be c011- structed of paper or other light material,
which may bejlaid out fiat for transportation when not in use, and may be quickly act of being placed over the box.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the severalviews.
The box is usually constructed of pasteboard or heavy paper, and is bent or creased 5 for easy folding laterally along the lines C and D, which provides for a foldin of the sides, H, H, R and R, to cause them to assume a substantially right angled position with the portion B, P. Near each end I preferably cut. through the sides, H, H, R and R. as at l, 2. 3 and 4, respectively, toward the medial line of the portion B and P, preferably to the lines D and C, respectively. I cutout a portion of E, E, a part of the side adjacent to the ends thus segregated by means of the cuts, 1:, 2, 3 and 4, respectively, aforesaid, forming an en'- gaging tongue, F. adapted to enter the semi circular cut or openings, G, G, in the sides, H. H, R and R of the box frame. I also preferably bend or crease the box transversely along the lines, (Z, f, and it, and at each end 1 preferably crease the lines e, j, respec ively. When the sides, H, H, R and R, are raised and the ends. K, K, are also One portion of the box is adapted to be used as a cover for the other portion, and i for that purpose the portion P will be a cover for the portion B. In order to arrange the portion, B, for containing the articles desired to be placed therein, a filler or cell structure, L, may be used. The box containing portion will thus be formed by raising the sides, H and H, and end, K, securing them by means of the tongue. F, and openings, G. as already stated. The portion, M, which is a part of the side, H,
but is separated, at m, from the portion. B,
by being cut, is, when the sidefl'l, is raised, folded to extend partly across the portion, B, as shown in Fig. 3. In the same way the portion, N, corresponding to the portion M,
is out along the line, 12, and is folded overin the manner shown in Fig.
The filler is made by arranging the strip of cardboard O to intersect and engage with the strips, S, S, )laced at right angles thereto in the usual manner. t s is shown in Fig. 3.
Preferably arranged along one of the sides, H, after the sides have been raised,
I as shown in Fig. 3, is a strip, A, which I call a locking strip, and which engages with the strips, 0, O, forming the filler. The end of the strip is preferably provided wi g a tongue T, adapted to be inserted in tn opening, 79, in the portion M. The por ion,
M, is provided with a tongue X, adaptel to be inserted in the opening V in the strip A. By means of the strip A thus arranged the filler is locked in connection with the sides of the box through the interconnection of the portions N and M, and thus holds the parts securely 1n position and makes them steady and causes the box to retain its conthe distance from the line f to 9 being substantially equal to the width of theside H, when in this position the end, K, is placed I over the opposite end and the sides R and R raised and placed at right angles to the.
portion. 13, 1 ,.the strips, E, E, are caused to overlap the sides, H, H, R and R, the
tongues l* which will hold the sides of the box in position.
F, entering the openings, G, G,
envelop the sides H and H.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a
1. A. folding box comprising a. thin flat strip creased for folding laterally along lines I a short distance from the side edges, whereby when folded the portion between the creases and the edges will form the sides of the box and cover; said strip also creased from side to side along lines a short distance from each end, wherebysthe portion between said transverse creases and theends may be folded at right angles to the main strip, one
end forming the end of the box, the other the end of the cover therefor; said strip creased along two linesextending from one edge to the other about midway between the ends of the strip; said lines separated from each other a distance equal to the depth of the sides of the box; said strip cut from each side toward the medial line at each end, forming a locking portion adapted to overlap the sides of the box and cover at each end; said strip cut away at the sides about midway between its ends and also cut. from said cut away portion toward one end of thea strip, forming two pieces adapted to be introverted; one of said introverted portions vprovided with a locking tongue, the other ment with said strip, which is also in positive engagement with said filler, substantially as described.
2'. A folding box comprising a thin fiat strip arranged to be folded along the sides and ends and cut and creased midway between the ends; a portion of said cut and creased part arranged to be folded to form a portion of the end of the box and a hinge 40 for the cover thereof; one end of the box and one end of the cover provided with tongues engaging with slots in the sides of the box and cover, respectively; the ends of the box adjacent. to the said hinged portion between the box and the cover provided with end portions, one having a tongue and the other a slot, therein; a filler placed insaid box; a locking strip provided with a tongue at. one end and a slot intermediate of the ends, cut to engage and be held in position by said filler; the tongue on said locking,'
strip inserted in a slot in one of the end pieces of said box; a tongue on the other end piece of said box entering the slot. in said locking strip.
39A folding box comprisinga thin flat strip adapted to be folded in such a manner as to form a box partly open at one end andthe cover therefor; a filler adapted to be placed in said box; a strip cutto engage said filler and bent to form a portion of the end of the box and provided with a tongue engaging a slot in the end of the box; one of the portions of the end of the box provided with a tongue engaging a slot in said stri I so arranged and connected up that said strip, forms a part of the box and is positively in engagement with the filler therein.
