Application filed December 24, 1908.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DON LoUis CLEMENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evangeline, in the parish of Acadia and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate- Springs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in spring devices for closing gates, doors and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive gate spring which may be readily applied to a gate so as to occupy little space and which will be strong, durable and effective in operation.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of a gate illustrating the application of the invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the invention removed from the gate.
In the drawings 1 denotes a gate hinged at Q to a post 3, and fl. denotes the improved spring closing device. The latter comprises a rod having one of its ends hinged to the post and its other end provided with a head 6 to serve as a stop for a coil spring 7. This spring surrounds the outer portion of the rod 1 and is confined between the head 6 and a plate 8 secured by screws or similar fastenings 9 to the gate 1 and having an opening 10 through which the rod 5 is adapted to slide. The inner or pivoted end of the rod 5 has a reduced portion 11 formed by flattening the opposite faces of said end and said reduced portion is arranged in a bifurcated stud 12 projecting from an apertured attaching plate 13 secured on the post 3 by screws or similar fastenings 14. The end 11 of the rod 5 is pivoted in the stud 12 by a Patented Feb. 8, 1910.

vertical pivot 15 so that as the gate swings upon its hinge the rod 5 will swing upon the pivot 15 and the plate 8 will move longitudinally on said rod. As the gate swingsto its open'position the plate 8 moves out- 'ardly on the rod to compress the spring 7 so that when the gate is released expansion of the spring will move the plate 8 inwardly on the rod and, consequently, swing the gate to its closed position.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the invention is exceedingly simple and practical in construction and may therefore be produced at a small cost and will be strong and durable and easy to apply to a gate, door or the like.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
The combination with a gate post, and a horizontally swinging gate hinged thereto, of a bearing plate *ertically secured to the inner face of the post and provided with a stud projecting therefrom at a right angle, said stud being bifurcated to form a horizontal slot therein, a pin vertically seated in said stud parallel with the hinges of the gate and adapted to be passed through said slot, a rod having a reduced flattened end adapted to be seated in said slot and pivotally connected to said pin and having an integral stop head upon the outer end thereof, a vertically disposed guide plate secured at its lower end to the gate and having its upper end quarter-twisted at a right angle to the gate, said angular end formed with an opening to slidably receive the intermediate portion of the rod, and a coiled spring arranged on said rod between said stop head and the angularly disposed end of the guide plate.
