Application led May 27, 1918.. Serial No. 236,835.
Durant, in the county of Bryan and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Closers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as `will enable `Others skilled in the art to which it appertain-s to make and use the same. i i i This invention relates to door closers, and it relates more particularly to an improved double acting device for holdinga door or the like in closed or o-pen position.
@ne of the objects of this, invention is to provide a device of thischaracter which may be quickly, easily and conveniently attached to any door and door-casing; but which is especially applicable for screen doors, window shutters and the like;
Another object is to provide a` device of this character which is very simple of con struction and comparatively inexpensive;
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is strong, durable, effective and thoroughly practical.
lOther objects and `advantages may become apparent to Vpersons who read the f ollowing details of description in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, in Which:
Figure l is an elevation disclosing a door frame, screen door and my improved double acting device attached thereto;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device, the halfeopen `position beingshown 1n dotted lines" Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 except that it shows the device in its position for holding the door wide open;
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view, the section bein taken along line 1 -4e of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 1s a sectional detail view, the section being taken along the line 5-5 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a sectional detall vlew, the section being taken along line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
Referring to these drawings in detail, in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts throughout the several views, the door casing 7 and screen door 8, being of ordinary construction, are not described in detail. The device which constitutes the present invention is disclosed at the top part of Fig. 1, being secured to i i Specification of Letterfsiatent.
ratenteanen. teneis.
the casing 7 by means of` screws 9 which eX- tend through apertures of a flange 10 said flange comprising a right-angle extension of a sheet metal plate 11 which is formed with an aperture 12 and a slot 11', the latter extending` from a point adjacent to the iiange or attaching element 10 tc appoint ad;- jacent to the opposite end. of fthe.fplate. A.
lever 13` is pivotally connected `'tothe plate. 11 by means of a rivet or pivotlwhich ex-` tends through the aperture 12 and through a corresponding aperture in said lever 13.
The lever 13 ispivotally` connectedfto a link..
15 by means of a rivet 16,1 and a washer` 17 is. disposed between the link 15 and'ilever 13. One of the links 15i`s aperturedto receive an element `18, one end of this element constitutinga stu-d which extends through the slot 11 and travelstherealong,the other` end of `the element 18 constitutinga stud which connects one end of a spring 19 with the link 15, the other end of tl1espring119 being connected withthe lever 13 through the medium of a wire loop or eye 20 which extends through one of several apertures 21 of `the lever and has its ends extending in opposite directions and turning laterally of the edges of the lever, as clearly illustrated in Fig; 5. It may be seen that the sides of the slot 11 constitute a trackror guide for the element 18.` .1
An apertured member 22 has a screw 23 extending through one of itsfapertures andsecured to the upper part ofthe door, and the other aperture or loop 24 of the member 22 receives the `free end lofi-the` lever 13 and allows the latter 'to slide therethrough.
The members 11, 13, 15 and 17 are each preferably formed by stamping from sheet metal, thereby reducing the cost'of manufacture to the minimum, the other elements also being formed of comparatively inexpensive material such as wire and the like.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that when the device is in the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2, the action of the spring is held in alinement with the slot 11', so that the door is held in its half-open position. However, if the door is swung toward the left, the spring 19 cooperates with the elements 11 and 15 for holding the lever 13 in its door-closing position; whereas, if the door is moved rightward from the dotted line position, the spring 19 coperates with said elements 11 and 15 for moving lever 18 into its door-opening position. It will be seen, therefore, that the device is equally effective for holding the door closed or holding it wide open. Y
Although I have described this eiiibodiment of my invention very specifically, itis not intended to limit this invention to these -exact details of construction and arrangement of parts, but I am entitled to make changes within the scope of the inventive idea disclosed-in the foregoing description and following claims.
'l/Vhat I Vclaimas my invention is:
l. The combination of a support provided with a track, a lever pivotally connected to said support, a member pivotally connected to said lever and provided with an element that travels along said track and is guided thereby, and a spring having one end engaged with said lever and having its other end connected with said member and being coperative with the latter and with said support to hold said lever in different positions relative to said support.
2. The combination of a support provided with a track, a lever pivotally connected to said support, a member pivotally connected to saidlever and provided with an element that travels along said track and is guided thereby, and a retractile spring having one end connected with said lever and having its other end connected with said member between the points where the latter connect with said track and said lever, whereby the said spring is cooperative with Vsaid support and said member-s0 as to hold said lever in differentpositions relative to said support.
3. The combination of a sheet metal plate formed with an aperturcd attaching iange at one end and with a track extending from a point adjacent to the flange to a point adjacent to said attaching element to a point' adjacent to the opposite end, a link provided witli oppositely extending studs at one end, a lever. pivotally connected to said opposite end of the plate and pivotally connected to said link, and a retractile spring having one end secured to said lever an having its other end secured to one of said oppositely extending studs, the other of said studs extending through said slot and being slidable therealong.
5. The combination with a door or the like and the casing thereof, of a plate provided witli an aperture at one end and with means at its other end to secure it to said casing and with a slot between and extending toward said ends, a lever having one end connected to the door, a pivot extending through said aperture and connecting the other end of said lever to said plate, a link pivotally connected with said lever and provided with a stud which extends through said slot and is slidable tlierealoiig, and a retractile spring having one end connected with said lever and having its other end connected to said link.
-In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
