My invention relates to roofing material, and its object is to provide a composite roofing in elongated4 sheets ready to be laid with their parts adjacent to their longer edges overlapping in such a manner as to prevent the entrance of moisture where the sheets overlap and avoid ldecay of the roofing material and the `rustingof the nails `which are used to attach it tothe roof.

This cement is, preferably, of material similar to that composing the cement body of the' roofing' sheet andadjunctivestrip, so that a practically continuous covering is thus eected.
Preparatory to the construction of the roofing, a seam 10 is run through the part of the strengthening'layer 2 between the folds 4 and 5 and through the main part of this strengthening layer closely adjacent and parallel to the fold 5. This seam 10 is advantageous in handling `the strengthening layer before itf-is applied to the cement body during the manufacture of the roofing, and
1 also adds to its strength after the roofing is completed, in that it reinforces the .connecr tion of the two parts of the strengthening layer 2 thus connected together, and prevents the distortion of the strengthening layer in this region under the action of winds or other forces, which distortion would be liable to disturb the cement coating over andl around the nailing section. As illustrated,
I prefer to provide the woven strengthening layer 2, on thc one'side, and the layerof compact material 8, on the other side, with a coating of suitable weather prooing material 11, these coat-ings extending on both sides from the edge 3 .of the main sheet to the extreme edge of the adjunctive strip.
By providing the adj unctive strip of composition identical with or similar to that of the main sheet, and vof equal thickness therewith, the rooling sheets, in their completed condition as-applied to theroof, have the nails entirely inclosed within the body of' the sheet at a distance from the edge of the sheet increased over that at which they are in theordinary sheet equal to the width of the adjunctive strip. This adjunctive4 strip,
being of the same thickness as the main sheet,
dispenses with the necessity of bringing the covering lap down over the edge of the body part of the sheet, thus avoiding all the difliculty caused by the puckering of Vthis covering lap. Thus the roong may be applied with. the exercise of less skill, at a decreased cost, but at thel same time, owing to the increased protection afforded in the region of vand the underlying layer bf paper, or other material, with a layer of the cement or simi- ,lar composition running between them, the

and the layer of strengtheningmaterial being pliable, it will be seen that the cement, or similar composition, constituting the body of the roofing, will readily separate coinci- -dent with the slit in the paper foundation so that it is only necessary to-run the layers or strata together, in the usual manner, in manufacturing my improved roofing, after which .the adjunctive Ystrip may be readilyy separated, vexcept' for the strengthening layer which binds it tothe main sheet 'read-y for use. The seam running along adjacent to the. fold 5` affords a fulcrnm for accomplishing the separation of the covering lap from t-he nailing 'section to permit the nails to be driven throughlsaid nailing section in applying thc'rooing. -The Weather proofing 1s applied to both sides of the rooting after the strata have been brought together, and is also caused to cover the inner adjacent edges of the main sheet and adjunctive strip, respectively, as well as their outer edges.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :4
l. In ready made roofing, the combination with a main strip of rooting having a nailing section adjacent to one edge, and a covering lap therefor, of an adjunctive strip attached to the main strip by means of said covering lap and adapted to extend coincident with the main strip along the edge -thereof when the covering lap lies over the nailing section. l
2. In ready made rooting, the combination with a mam strip of rooting made up v-of a composition body and a woven strengthening layer imposed thereon and partially embedded therein, and overlapping and folded upon the body, whereby a reinforced nailing sectionand a coveringlap therefor is provided, of an adjunctive strip of like composition upon which an extension of the covering lap 1s imposed and partially embedded therein to join said adjunctive strip to the main stri and .allow it to extend coincident `therewith along the edge thereof when the covering lap lies over the reinforced nailing section. i
3. In ready made roofing, the combination with a main strip of roofing made up of a composition body and a woven strengthening layer imposed thereon and partially embedded therein, overlapping and folded upon the body and havinga seam attaching the folded part of -said strengthening la er 1 to the main part thereof, whereby a dou le thickness of said strengthening layer is provided to constitute a nailing section a-nd the strengthening layer past4 the seam forming a covering lap for the nailing section, of an adjunctive strip comprislng a com osltion body uponwhich an'extenslon o the covering lap 1s imposed' and partially emafter the strengthening layer'is embedded in the composition body.

5. In ready made roofing, the com-bination of a composition body and a strengthening layer imposed thereon and partially embedded therein, and overlapping and folded upon the body adjacent to one edge throughout the length of the roofing, and having a seam running longitudinally of the roofing to secureV the overlapped and folded part of the strengthening layer to its main part, whereby the extension of the strengthening layer pastrthe seam constitutes a covering lap, and a foundation of compact material imposedJ upon thecomposition body on the side opposite to that in which the strengthening layer is partially embedded therein, having a slity running longitudinally of the 'roofing adjacent to the edge adjacent'to whichv the strengthening layer overlaps andis folded upon the body, whereby the roofing may be divided into a main strip and an adjunctive strip 'of -like composition, with the adjunctive' strip joined to the .main strip by an extension of the covering la'- andwhereby the covering lap with the adjunctive strip joined thereby may be raised from the body, the section of the body under the, covering lap constituting a nailing section, substantially as set forth. j

In ready made rooting, the combination of a composition body and a Vwoven strengtlening layer and a foundation of compact material, the com osition body running between the strengt ening layer and the foundation, of a slit running longitudinally in the foundation of compact material near 'one edge of the roofing, the woven strengthening'layer being folded to be raised from the composition body, and said slit dividing the roofing into a main strip and an adjunctive strip joined together by the strengthening layer, substantially as". set

7. -In ready made roofing, the combination of a composition ybody and a woven strengthening layer imposed thereon and partially embedded therein and folded upon 4itself to constitute a reinforced nailing secsoV tion and a covering lap on said roofing, and
