- sheet, this invention consisting in providing a strip of roofing made up of a composition body and a woven strengthening layer iniposed thereon and partially embedded therein, and overlapping and' folded upon the body to form a nailing lap and a covering lap with4 an under-folded extension to the nail-- ing lap, whereby the strength of the nailing lap is increased and the durability of the edge of the roofing, constituted by the nailing lap, is increased.
ln'the drawing: Figure'l is' a. sectional perspective vieu7 showingrthe roofing in place on the roof, part of the seam covering lap- Fig. 2 is a perspective view being raised. illustrating a modification. Fig. 3 is a scctional View illustrating my invention, the nail covering lap being raised. Fig. 4 is a sectional View showing the posit-ions of thel parts `when the seam is finished.
The roofing is made up Vof the body 1 of cement, the essential qualities of whichiare viscousness, to cause it to adhere to the woven strengthening layer 2, and pliability,
to form a roofing sheet that may be convcniently rolled up and handled. The Woven strengthening layer is composed 'of burlap, which, at. one edge 3 oft-he sheet, terminates coincident with the cement body, but at -the other edge of the sheet continues pastl the cement body, and, being partially embedded in the cement body to within the proximity' of this second mentioned edge, diver-ges therefrom at 4, is continued. separate from the body portion past the edge thereof, then folded under upon itself at 5, back closeto the region of its divergence from thc body' portion, then foldedfoi'ward at 6, aud then again folded under upon itself at 7,-tliis last l fold 7 .being coincident with the edge 8 of the cementbodv, and the layer 9 being. continued backward, preferably, past the region ofthe divergence 4 and second folding 6 thereof, and terminating at 10. This last layer 9 thus lies directly on the cement body throughout the region near itsedge 8 and forms a reinforcement therefor, so that when the nails 11 are driven through it a secure holding is'effected, and, due to the fold 7 coming ycoincident with the edge 8, also forms a durable ledge for the roofing sheet. The roofing sheet is preferably com# pleted by adding on the lower side of the cement body, a layer 12 of compact material,
such asy paper or Woolen feltI` this layer com` ing next to the roof `boards 13, into which the nails 1.1 are driven. The roofing sheet is beveled near both edges 3 and 8 to decrease the bulkiness of the seam formed by o\ erlapping the sheets. and when the nails have been driven through the nailing flap between the folds (l and 7, the part of the woven strengthening layer between the point of divcigcnce'l and fold 6, which is folded at 5 and thus forms the covering flap, is secured down over 'the heads of the nails and 'cement which iis supplied in suicieiit quantityto fill up the meshes of the woven strengthening layer throughout the region of the nail covering Hap, and. this` cement being of material of a character similar to 'that composing the ccin'ent body of the roofing sheet. a practically continuous covering is thus effected. l
When the layert) is continued hack as far ,as the joint 10. a seam 14 maybe run along,
passing through the main body1 part-,of the woven strengthening lavcr and through this layer 9 near. its termination Yl0. before the Woven strengthening layer is applied tothe cement, body, this constructionbeing illus* trated in Fig. 2 of Athe drawing. This seam 14 is advantageous in handling the strengthening layer before it is' applied to the cement body during the manufacture of the roofing, and also Iadds to its strength after the roofing is completed, in that it reinforces `the connectionof thestrengthening layer 2 With the cen'ieut'body 1 in the region of their divergence'by binding the upper main body part of the woven strengthening layer to the lower layer 9, and Ithus constituting for all practical purposes a continuous superimposed strengthening layerl f roin edge 'to edge; of" the roofing sheet, but allowing of the formation ot the. diverging covering lap.
los'
This secure fastening of the woven strengthening layer to the cement body, and the duroble edge presented by the fold 7 being ad ventegeous in that they render the roofing more durable when it 1s being handled be tween the time of its completion and Jche `time it is applied to the roof, assume especial importance in cases where the rooting must be transported e considerable distance and by Letters Patent is:
l. .in ready mode roofing, comprising u cement body portion and a superimposed woven strengtheninglayer partially embedded therein, which diverges therefrom and is folded upon itself to form :i nail and seam covering dep, end again folded to form, in conjunction with the cement body. a nailing flap, an ladditional under-folded layer to the part of the Woven strengthening layer which is comprised in the nailing flap and extends back past the line of origin of 'the covering flap, whereby a folded edge is brought substantially coincident. with the edge of the cement body, and y'thereby edditionel thicltnessiend strength are provided for the nailing flap, substantial as and. for the purposes'speciied.
2. ln ready milde roofing, comprising a cement body petition and e superimposed Woven. strengthening layer partially embedded therein, which diverges therefrom and is folded upon itself to Jform :i nail and seam coverinp' fia and :main folded to form in .a p7 a 7 conjunction with the cement body, a nailing flap, an additional under-folded layer to the part of the woven strengthening loyer which is comprised in the nailing ildp, whereby :i folded edge is brought substantially coincident with the edge of the cement body, und whereby additional thickness und strength :tre provided for the nailing flap, seid additional. under-folded loyer being extended beck pest the line ott origin oi. the covering lap and being attached by :i seem to the main part of the Woven strengtheninglayer in the region neer its divergence from the cement body, substzm tially :is land for the purposes specified.
3. In ready mede rooting, comprising :i cement body portion and :t superimposed woven strengthening loyer parti-Lilly embedded therein, which diverges therefrom .find is folded upon itself to form a` nail and scum covering); flap, und again folded to .form in conjunction with the cement body, o nailing tldp, an additional under-folded layer to the part of the woven strengthening layer which is comprised in the nailing finp, whereby u `folded edge is brought substantially coincident with the edge of the cement body, and whereby additional thickness und strength vare provided for the nailing iiup, ubstentielly es und for the purposes specinled.
