ROOFING FABRIC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,825, dated September 12, 1899.

Be it known that I, ROBERT J. REDICK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented an Improvement in Roofing Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.
Figure I is a plan showing two pieces of roofing fabric joined together side by side, as in use, parts being broken away to economize space and other parts being broken away to illustrate the construction and composition. Fig. 11 is a cross-section on the line II II of Fig. I upon an enlarged scale.
My object is to construct roofing fabric in such a way that the joint between two meeting edges will be less likely to leak and to produce a roofing fabric possessing a beveled edge at one side and a double edge at the other side to receive the beveled edge, as re quired to form a double-lap joint when the roofing fabric is laid.
As before suggested, my invention consists of a roofing fabric having a beveled edge at one side and a double edge at the other side to receive the beveled edge, as required to form a double lap when the roofing fabric is laid; and my invention consists, further, of the details and improved construction herein shown, described, and claimed.
My improved roofing fabric consists of a sheet 1 of seasoned asphalt roofing-felt, a sheet 2 of seasoned asphalt roofing-felt, a coating 3 of asphalt between the sheets 1' and 2, a-coating 4 of asphalt on top of the sheet 2, the sheet 5 of burlap saturated with asphalt, thus making the coating 6 of asphalt on top of the coating 4 and the coating 7 of asphalt on top of the burlap, and the wide layer of gravel 8 on top of the coating '7 and the narrow layer of sand 9 on top of the coating 7, beside the layer of gravel, said sanded strip being from one to three inches wide from one edge of the burlap and said graveled strip covering the balance of the burlap. The coatings 3 and 4 of asphalt are applied to the sheet 2 and to the burlap 5 by running said sheets through a tank of hot asphalt, and the sheets are stuck together before the asphalt cools.
When the sheet of burlap is applied to the upper sheet of roofing-felt, it is offset relative to the roofing-felt, as shown, the object ing these edges of the burlap and the roofingfelt from sticking together, thus producing two edges, the lower flap l1 and the upper 12..
\Vhen the roofing fabric is placed in position for use, the beveled edge of one sheet is inserted between the two edges of the next sheet above. This operation is performed by turning the upperfiap 12 upwardly, putting melted asphalt between the two flaps, then placing the beveled edge on top of the lower flap 11, then driving nails 13 downwardly through the beveled edge and the lower flap, then placing more melted asphalt on top of the beveled edge, and then pressing the upper flap down upon the beveled edge, thus covering the nails. Fresh asphalt is applied around the beveled edge and forms a bond between the beveled edge and the two edges.
I claim- 1. A roofing fabric consisting of a sheet of seasoned asphalt roofing-felt, a coating of asphalt upon the upper side of said felt, a folded strip of paper or similar material along one edge of said coating of asphalt, a sh eet of burlap upon said coating of asphaltand said strip, a coating of asphalt upon said burlap and a layer of gravel upon said asphalt, substantially as specified.
2. A roofing fabric consisting of a sheet of seasoned asphalt roofing-felt, a coating of asphalt upon the upper side of said felt, a folded strip of paper or similar material along one edge of said coating of asphalt, a sheet of burlap upon said coating of asphalt and said strip, said sheet of burlap being offset relative to said sheet of felt, a coating of asphalt upon said burlap and a layer of gravel upon said asphalt.
3. A roofing fabric consisting of a sheet of seasoned asphalt roofing-felt, a coating of asphalt upon the upper side of said felt, a folded strip of paper or similar material along one edge of said coating of asphalt, a sheet of burlap upon said coating of asphalt and said strip, a layer of gravel upon said asphalt leaving a narrow strip at one edge ungraveled and a layer of sand upon said narrow strip, substantially as specified.
4. A roofing fabric consisting of a sheet of seasoned asphalt roofing-felt, a coating of asphalt upon the upper side of said felt, a folded strip of paper or similar material along one edge of said coating of asphalt, a sheet of burlap upon said coating of asphalt and said strip, said sheet of burlap being offset relative to said sheet of felt, a layer of gravel upon said asphalt leaving a narrow strip at one edge ungraveled and a layer of sand upon said narrow strip, substantially as specified.
5. A roofing fabric consisting of a sheet of seasoned asphalt roofing-felt, a coating of asphalt upon said felt, a second sheet of seasoned asphalt roofing-felt upon said coating of asphalt, a second coating of asphalt upon said second sheet of felt, a folded strip of paper or similar material along one edge of said second coating of asphalt, a third coating of asphalt upon said second coating and said strip, a sheet of burlap upon said third coating of asphalt, a fourth coating of asphalt upon said burlap, a layer of gravel upon said fourth coating of asphalt leaving a'narrow strip at one edge ungraveled and a layer of sandupon said narrow strip, substantially as specified.

A roofing fabric consisting of a sheet of seasoned asphalt roofing-felt, a coating of asphalt upon said felt, a second sheet of seasoned asphalt roofing-felt upon said coating of asphalt, a second coating of asphalt upon said second sheet of felt, a folded 'strip of paper or similar material along one edge of said second coating of asphalt, a third coating of asphalt upon said second coating and said strip, a sheet of burlap upon said third coating of asphalt, said sheet of burlap being offset relative to said sheet of felt,a fourth coating of asphalt upon said burlap, a layer of gravel upon said fourth coating of asphalt, leaving a narrow strip at one edge ungraveled and a layer of sand upon said narrow strip, substantially as specified.
7. A roofing fabric consisting of a sheet of seasoned asphalt roofing-felt, a coating of asphalt upon said felt, a second sheet of seasoned asphalt roofing-felt upon said coating of asphalt, a second coating of asphalt upon said second sheet of felt, a folded strip of paper or similar material along one edge of said second coating of asphalt, a third coating of asphalt upon said second coating and said strip, a sheet of burlap upon said third coating of asphalt, a fourth coating of asphalt upon said burlap, and a layer of gravel upon said fourth coating of asphalt, substantially as specified.
8. A roofing fabric consisting of a sheet of seasoned asphalt roofing-felt, a coating of asphalt upon said felt, a second sheet of seasoned asphalt roofing-felt upon said coating of asphalt, a second coating of asphalt upon said second sheet of felt, a folded strip of paper or similar material along one edge of said second coating of asphalt, a third coating of asphalt upon said second coating and said strip, a sheet of burlap upon said third coating of asphalt, said sheet of burlap being oifset relative to said sheet of felt, a fon rth coating of asphalt upon said burlap, and a layer of gravel upon said fourth coating of asphalt, substantially as specified.
