WATCH-HOLDING CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1910.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILsoN E. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WVatch- Holding Cases; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvement in watch-holding cases, the object being to produce at a. low cost for manufacture, a simple, compact and convenient case for virtually converting watches into clocks.
\Vith these ends in view my invention consists in a watcl'i-holding case having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a flanged case-body 2 of substantially rectangular form, though its corners are rounded off. The flat outer face of this case-body is formed with a large circular opening 3 for the partial projection through it of the beveled crystal 4: of the watch 5, whereby the said crystal assists in centering the watch in the case. The front of the case-body 2, it will be understood, is perfectly flat. The rearwardly extending flange of the case-body is formed in its top with a deep rearwardly opening slot 6 which receives the pendant stem 7 which occupies the rounded forward end of the slot the rear end of which is closed by the forwardly projecting flange 8 of the flat cover 9 which has the same rectangular shape with rounded corners as the case-body 2, the flange 8 being set just enough within the edge of the cover 9 to result in the production of a shoulder 10 extending entirely around the cover and engaging with the rear edge of the flange of the case-body 2 so as to limit the inward movement of the cover with respect to the case-body. An exposed joint is in this way formed on the outside of the case.
The flat cover 9 is formed in its center with a circular opening 11 for the reception of a medallion consisting of a shallow sheetmetal cup 12 mounted in a flanged fastening ring 18 having an outer flange 14 for the retention of the cup 12 and having an inner flange 15 which is turned outward upon the inner face of the cover 9 whereby the ring 13, and hence the medallion, is permanently secured in place. The convex outer face of the cup 12 is preferably provided with a finishing plate 16 furnished with advertising or ornamental matter. The open inner face of the medallion, though relatively small with respect to the size of the watch, will assist in centering the watch and holding it in place.
By preference the cover will be provided on the inside with a fiat cushion 17 the central portion of which will, as shown, be slightly pushed into the open inner face of the medallion.
In the construction above described, the medallion permanently attached, as it is to the case, enriches the cover thereof and also assists in centering the watch.
I claim In a watch-holding case, the combination with a case-body having a central opening, of a cover formed with a central opening, a medallion permanently mounted in the said opening in the cover and comprising an inwardly opening cup, and a fastening ring, and a cushion located within the cover and extending over the medallion into the cup of which its central portion is pushed by the watch.
