WATCH-HOLDING CASE.

Be it known that I, IVILSON E. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in atch-Holding Cases; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accon'ipanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

My invention relates to an improvement in watch-holding cases, the object being to produce at a low costfor manufacture, a simple, compact and convenient case for virtually converting watches into clocks.

IVith these ends in view my invention consists in a watch-holding case having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a flanged case-body 2 of substantially rectangular form, though its corners are rounded off. The flat outer face of this case-body is formed with a large circular opening 3 for the partial projection through it of the beveled crystal 4 of the watch 5, whereby the crystal is made to assist in centering the watch in the case and holding it in place therein. The projection of the crystal 4 through the opening 3 also gives a finished appearance to the little clock produced by inclosing the watch in the case. The front of the case-body 2, it will be understood, is perfectly flat. The rearwardly extending flange of the said case-body, is located at a right angle to its flat front and formed in the center of its top with a deep Specification of Letters Patent.

rearwardly opening slot (3 which receives the pendant stem 7 which occupies the rounded forward end of the said slot the rear end of which is closed by the forwardly projecting flange 8 of the flat cover 9 which has the same rectangular shape with rounded corners as the case-body 2, the flange 8 being set justenough within the edge of the cover 9 to result in the production of a shoulder 10 extending entirely around the cover and engaging with the rear edge of the flange of the case-body so as to limit the inward movement of the cover with respect to the case-body. An exposed joint is in this way formed on the outside of the case at the rear edge thereof, but it is of such a character that it does not detract from the appearance of the finished case.

The cover 9 is formed with a centrally arranged. circular opening 11 having a slightly beveled edge and receiving a circular centering-plate in the form of a shallow cup 12 having an annular'flange 13, the said cup conforming in its concavity to the convexity of the back of the watch, as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the centering-plate, so called, assists in centering the watch in the case. The centering-plate is set into the opening 11 in the cover 10 from the inside thereof, the flange 13 engaging with the cover around the edge of the opening 11 therein as shown in Fig. 3. By preference I locate a flat cushion M within the cover. This cushion as shown conforms to the interior form of the cover and entirely conceals and protects the inner face of the centering-plate, making a yielding cushion for the watch and preventing the same from being scratched. The convex face of the cup 12 projects slightly beyond the rear face of the cover as shown in Fig. 3, and forms a fine surface for ornamentation. As shown it is provided with a paper sheet 15 displaying a heraldic ornament 16.

In the modified construction shown by Fig. 6, the cover 17 is formed with a circular opening 18 and receives a yielding centeringplate 19 made of paper and reinforced by a felt cushion 20. When such a cover is applied to a case-body like the case-body 2, the back of the watch-case will slightly spring the plate 19 into the opening 18, whereby the plate 19 will assist in centering the watch and holding it in place. The. outer face of the yielding plate 19 may, of

course, be provided with advertising or piction with a rectangular sheet-metal flanged case-body having a cent 'al opening formed in its front face of a rectangular sheetnietal cover having a centrally arranged circular opening in its flat back and formed with a flange fitting within the rear portion of the flange of the *ase-body and provided with a shoulder abutting against the rear edge of the said flange of the case-body and a yielding centering-plate located within the said cover for extension into the central opening therein and assisting in centering the watch in place.

In a watch-holding case, the combination with a case-body having a central opening formed in its front face, of a cover having a central circular opening, and a centering-plate set into the said cover and consisting of a shallow cup encircled by an annula r flange, the said cup extending into the opening in the cover, and the flange retaining the plate in place.

In a watch-holding case the eo1nbination with a case-body having a circular opening, of a cover having a circular opening, a centering-plate comprising a shallow circular cup and an annular retaining flange, the said plate being set into the cover so that its cup extends into the circular opening thereof, and a finishing plate applied to the outer face of the centering-plate and exposed through the circular opening in the cover.
