Patented Jan. 25, 1910.
Serial No. 506,283.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. l, Hnnnv ll'orifuuaN, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Norwalk, in the county oit Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Latehes; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the tigures oit reference marked thereon, to be a tull, clear, and exact, description ot the same, and which said drawings constitute part ot this slnrcilieation. and rcpi resent, in-
Figure l a side view ol a mortise latch embodying my invention, a portion oit the case broken away. Fig. 9 a sectional view on the line n-o ot Fig. l. Fig. 3 a broken sectional view on the same line with the latch bolt reversed. Fig. L.t a perspective view o'l the latch bolt traine, detached. Fig. 5 a perspective view ot the latch bolt, detached. Fig. (3 a broken perspective view illustrating my invention as applied to a rim latch.
This invention relates to an improvement in latches either ot' the mortise or rim type which are provided with a latch bolt which may be reversed so as to permit the latch to be used on either right or lett hand doors.
The object of this invention is a simple arrangement ot parts whereby the latch bolt may be readily reversed, and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
The latch bolt 2 is ot' the knuckle antitriction type having a rounded or cam surface 3 for Contact with the keeper in closing the door. This latch bolt is mounted upon a pivot Lit in a frame 5 having beveled edges at i opposite sides to engage with the beveled l lugs 6 formed on the inner tace of the it'ront plate 7 of a mortise lock or in other' words the trarne is transversely movable with relation to the case. The latch bolt is cnt away l to form projections 8 through which a pin 9 l extends, this pin beingadapted to enter a notch l() `tormed 'tor it in the outer end otl the latch plate ll which is moved by a hub 12 in the usual n'ianner, and which is thrown 'Forward b v a spring 1?. When one side oit the case is removed the frame o' may be readily slipped out ot place, turned over, and slipped back so as to reverse the bolt and change it'y `trom right to left, or viee versa.
ln Figs. l, 2 and 2) ot the drawings, the invention is shown as applied to a mortise case; but the invention is equally applicable tor rim eases` as shown in Fig. o oit the drawings, in which case. however, the vlront wall is preferably cut. away to receive the trame 5 so that the outer tace olf the frame 5 will be flush with the outer tace ot the case; but the arrangement; ot the latch bolt in the trame will be otherwise the same and the latch bolt will be operated in the usual manner.
l. ,ln a latch, the combination with the ease and latch plate. ot a transversely movable trame mounted in the trout taee o t. said case. a latch bolt pivotally mounted in said 'trame and provided with a pin adapted to be detachably engaged by the said .latch plate.
A latch comprising a casing, a longitudinally movable 'trame mounted in the 't1-ont tace oit the case, a latch bolt `pivotall)7 mounted in said trame. said latch bolt t'ormcd with projections, a pin extending through said projections, a latch plate formed at its torwardv end with a notch to receive said pin, and means itor moving the said latch plate.
ln testimony whereof, l have signed this' specification in the presence ot two subscribing witnesses.
'HENRY I[()l `l4`i\L/\N`.
