BOX FOR TOILET PREPARATIONS AND THE LIKE.
flpecmcation of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 18, 1910.
Application filed Apr1l19,'1908. Serial at. 490,000.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL HERZSTAM, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county'of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for To1let Preparations and the Like, of which the followin is a specification. I
y invention relates to toilet articles, and the object is to provide a simple, convenient and sanitary means for holding a toilet preparation, such as soap, to protect it from contamination? when not in use and to present it for use when desired,.,being more especially designed for use with shaving soap in the form of'sticks.
My invention consists in the combination with an elongated case, and a lid to close one end of the case, of a soap holder within the case, and a link slidably connected to the soa holder and to the lid.
y invention also consists in the parts and in the details of construction and arrange ment of parts as will hereinafter be more fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a'vertical section of my imroved device on a line corresponding to t e line m-w of Fi 3. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of. same. Fig. 3 is a cross section on a line corresponding to the line 3 -y of Fig. 1, illustratlng a modification of the device in which the sides ofthe case are embossed to form grooves forthe links and the projecting parts of the holder to slide in. Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line y-y of Fig. 8, illustrating a modification of the box illustrated in Fig. 8. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the device, illustrating it in open position with the preparation exposed for use. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the holder. Fig. 7 is a detail View of one of the links. Fi .8 is a side elevation of a device in which t e lid is deeper than that illustrated in the preceding figures. Fig. 9 is a sectional view corres onding to the section illustrated in Fig. 1, lllustrating another modification:
As illustrated, and as I prefer to embody my invention, the case 1 is cylindrical and elongated with its bottom 2 closed and its top open, and with a head 3 around it near the to above which bead 3 a lid 4 of shallow cylin rical formation fits over the case to close thetop. Such a race tacle is designed to receive an elongated cy indrical cake or stick of soap, or similar material, 5. Within the'case a holder 6 is a disk 7 of a. )proximately the diameter of the. stick 5 o soap or other material, and adapted to lie across the interior of the case wit ears 8 at opposite sides extending up wardly in the case. A link 9 is rovided on each side, each link having a slot 10, and the ears 8 of the holder 6 have rivets 11 which ass throu h the slots 10 in the links and sli ably attac the links'to the holder. These links 10 extend up along the sides of the case and. are attached to the insides of the lid 4 at opposite sides thereof by means of. rivets 12 in the. lid which ass through longitudinal slots 13 in the links and s lclably attach thelinks to the lid. f The. stick 5 of soap, or other preparatiomhasits lower end resting on the disk 7 of the holder 6, and is embraced between the ears'8 thereof. Thus constructed, with the preparation inserted into the case, the slots in the li nksll of the case above the head 3, tightly closin the case, as is desired. When it-is desire to use the greparation the lid is merely withdrawn om the case, the links ttached thereto slidin alon the rivets 1' i1i-;i}tlie ears of the hol er an when the ends of. their longitudinally slots 10 'are reached the rivets 11 engage with these ends of the slots andthe preparation is drawn upward inthe case, on the holder. The sliding. .o the link 9, with'respect to the holder, befbre the holder begins to move upward, allowsg the lid 4 to rise to .such a position that it will swing soap, or other preparation being used, out of the way, leavi the pre aration exposed for use, as is best 1 ustrate; in.Fig. ,5 ;of the drawing. Thus, the reparation is. automatically drawn out of the casefor .use' but efliciently .held in the case while beingused, and the lid remains attached tothe case so that all of the articles are kepttogether and not misplaced or lost. At the same time, if
preparation from the case, such as in the use of a stick of shaving soap for application to the face, it may be readily removedand, as readily inserted into the holder-6; However, with the use of shavingsoap in such a form, as well aswith the use of most other e preparations which it will be found convement to employ my improved boxy-in connection with, it is usually convenient to over the upper'end of the stick or cake of,
it is desired to remove the stickjgor; cake of provided comprising I ongitudinal allow the lid to be pushed down on the part merely draw'the stick 'or cakeof material up Y as shown in Fig. e
5 of the drawing, using the box asi a hand while applying the preparation.
As illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5 of the drawing, the case 1 is of sufiiciently larger.
diameter than the stick 5 to accommodate the ears 8 and the links 11 at the sides of the stick inside of the case. However, it ma be found desirable to construct the case witii longitudinally extending beads or embossed arts such as the parts 14 of the case 1 illustrated in Fi 4. Interiorlv of this case, these parts afior grooves for the ears of the .holder and the links attached thereto, to-
gether with their rivets to slide in, and the.
case need be of only suflicient diameter to admit the stick 5.
As above described, the lid 4 is of comiplaratively shallow cylindrical formation tting over only a comparativelysmall part of the case near its top. However, it may.
be found desirable to construct a case with the lid more nearly approachin the length of the case, such as the lid 4 o the case 1", which case is provided with a'covering 15 against which the lid 4 abuts when it is in place on the case. The part of the case receiving the lid extends a considerable distance wlthin the lid when the lid is in place. Withthis style of case and lid it will be seen that the longitudinal slots 13 in the links 9 allow the rivets 12* to be placed near the lower end of the lid at a considerable distance from the upper end of the link when the lid is on the case. Thus, the lid will be allowed to slide up off of the case and far enough to swin over the upper end of the stick 5 containe therein. The case is slotted at 16, on each side, to accommodate the rivets 12.
As shown in Fig. 9, the holder consists in spurs 7 directed across the case 1 at right angles to and formed integral with the ears 8, and adapted to enter the stick 5 of soap or similar material to hold it and pull it up.
in the case.
Havin fully described my invent-ion,
what I c aim as new and desire to secure byclosed at one end and open at the other end, and a lid fitting over the open end to close it, a holder consistin in a disk with cars at op osite sides wit in the case thereacross, 1m cs extending lon itudinally of the case and havin longitu inal slots, the lid and the ears 0 the holder being attached to the links through the slots therein, whereby said holder and said lid are slidable with respect to the links and with res ect to each other, substantially as and for t e purposes herein set forth.
3. In a box for toilet preparations and the like, an elongated case and a lid to fit on the like, a cylindrical case having grooves formed in its inner sides and a lid to fit on the case, a holder for the reparation within the case and means for s idably connecting the holder to the lid lying within and slidable in said grooves, the sides of said case conforming to said preparation contained therein on its concave sides between said grooves, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
5. In a box for toilet preparations and the like, a case, a'holder in the case to hold the preparation therein, a lid for the case, and means for slidably and pivot-ally connecting the lid to the holder to allow it to fit on the case around the preparation therein or to slide up and ,swing over said preparation, the holder being adapted for withdrawing the pre aration from the case, substantially as and or the purposes herein set forth.
6. In a box for toilet preparations and the like, a case having ooves formed in its inner sides and a li to fit-on the case, a holder for the reparation within the case, and means for s lidably connecting the holder to the lid lyin within and slidable in said grooves, the si es of said case conforming to said preparation contained therein on its inner sides between said grooves, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
