To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Noni-r T. AcnnRLr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Fatchogue, county of Sulfolk, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates more particularly to a knock-down extension table.

ln places where there is not very much room, as for example bungalows and small country cottages, it is desirable to have a table larger than is generally necessary on account of the number of people present and on such occasions it is desirable to have a table. which may be extended and which after being used may be knocked down and stored or placed out of the way, and which also may be quickly placed in position. It is also desirable at out-door places, as places for picnics and the like, to have a table which may be easily and cheaply made, and which may be extended or made to fold or to be knocked down into a compact space for transportation and similar purposes.

The primary object of the invention is to provide ay simple and eiiicient table which may be moved longitudinally and laterally and which may be readily placed in a knockdown position when not in use, thus adapting the same to be longitudinally moved to provide a table of the desired length, and which may be folded in a compact space to be placed out of the way.

A further object of the invention is to provide a table or like device which is simple in construction and which may be readily and cheaply made to adapt it for various purposes.

lith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claim at the end of the description.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of table or device embody-- ing my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly broken away, showing how the different leaves may be joined and held to the table frame. Fig. 3 is an end elevation; and Fig. 4f is a transverse section taken on a line IV-IV of Fig. 2.

The table frame or body l0 may comprise two members l1 and 12, which are relatively movable with relation to each other so that said body or frame may be extended to various lengths to make the table short or long as desired. The members 11 and 12 are each provided with legs 13 suitably braced apart by means of rods l-l or otherwise, and said member 11 comprises two side pieces 15 and 1G which may be substantially `T-shaped in form so as to provide a guide or tongue 17 which is adapted to lit and slide in a groove 18 formed between longitudinal ribs or ianges 19 and 20 of the member 12. The legs of the side pieces 11 may be so made as to properly guide said pieces during their adjusting movement, and said legs may be provided with plates or guides 21 to assist in holding said pieces properly together, and said pieces 19 and 2O or either of them may be provided with a projection, as 22, to limit the relative movement of the members 11 and 12 with respect to each other and prevent separat-ing the members while the table is being extended. By this means a simple and efhcient lengthwise adjust-ment of the two membersv is obtained, and a table thus constructed may be extended to various lengths or moved to form a compact table.

The table members 11 and 12 are each provided at their ends with a foldable device 23 located at the upper and lower portion of the table legs. Each device 23 comprises two members or links 24 and 25, and these links or members are each pivoted, at 26, to the legs of the members 11 and 12 and to each other, as at 27, to adapt said devices to be held in substantially a horizontal position to properly hold the side pieces of the members apart. One of said members of each device 28, as 25, is provided with an overhanging lip or part 28 which is adapted to engage the edge of the opposite member to limit the movement thereof in one direction and to assist in holding them in a horizontal position, but which will permit the members of said devices to move on said pivots and to fold inwardly to permit the table members to be knocked down for storage or other purposes.

A hook or device 29, which is pivoted at 30 to one of the legs of one or of both of t-he members 11 and 12, has its end 31 adapted to engage a pin or projection 32 on the leg of the opposite side piece of said member, and said device 29 may be located at either or both ends of the table to serve as means for further locking and holding the parts while in use.

Each side piece of the members l1 and l2 may be provided with a plurality of apertures 33 in which dowel pins 34C projecting from the table pieces or leaves 35 forming the table top are adapted to t. Each table leaf may be provided with openings 35a at one edge and pins 36 at the other edge as is usual in extension tables so that said pins of one leaf may it in the openings of the other leaf and thereby permit the insertion or the removal of one or more of the leaves at will and at the same time provide means for holding the leaves forming the top properly to the frame or top of the table.

It will be understood that instead of providing two relatively movable members there may be more than two, the parts being constructed to permit this, and that any suitable locking and adjusting means may be provided for holding the parts when moved laterally or when moved lengthwise to vary the length of the table.

F rom the foregoing it will be seen that a simple and eHieient device is provided which may be made to extend both laterally and longitudinally to` adapt the same to be used for various purposes either for in-door or out-door purposes and where it is desired that the table be stored or knocked down when not in use; that simple and cllicient means are provided whereby the members may be moved relatively with respect to each other; that simple and eflicient locking means are provided for the parts when adjusted, and that said table as thus constructed may be readily and cheaply made and assembled.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A table comprising two frame sections each consisting of parallel longitudinal members, the members of one frame section being longitudinally adjustable on those of the other section, leg supports for each of said sections, vertical guide plates secured to said legs and overlapping the longitudinal member of the adjacent frame section, and means for maintaining the supporting legs in position when the table is extended, and for permitting the legs to be brought together, consisting of pivoted links, and a hook pivoted to one leg and engaging a fastening on the opposite leg.
