Specification i'crnling part ol Letters Patent N0. 9,5 69, dated December bi, i852.
To @ZZ whom tmc-.1j concern.-
B'e it known that we, ABR/tnt CLow, ,CHARLES CLow, and CHARLES N. GLOW, ot' Port Byron, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a. new and Improved Scythe and Cradle Snath; and we do hereby declare that the following is a i'ull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the "accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of the snath 5 Fig. 2, a transverse section thereotl in the line a: .fr of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a 'transverse sectioxrofthe samein the line y y of Fig. l.
Like letters designate like parts in all the igures. l
The nature of-our invention consists, first, in constructing the snath of metal inthe tubular form, for .the purpose of securing great durability and Ifacility of shaping it as desired While it retains the required lightness and strength; and, secondly, in the manner ot' adjusting the nehs on the snath, as herein fully set forth. p
First, the snath Ais constructed ot' metal in the form of a tube in any convenient manner, generally by bending thin sheets-of wroughtiron into the tubular form and brazing the edges together. The sheets of metal shodld be quite thin to insure lightness, since iii a tube great strength and firmness are compatible with extreme lightness of construction. The snath isthen bentinto the desired shape, which is capable of being readily varied as desired by the purchaserthis property ot' the tube being one ot' the desiderata gained by its use. Its almost unlimited durability is another object gained.` The part of the snath Where the'heel of the Scythe lits' upon it is iiattened on the` under side, and the cavity of this portion ot'it is fitted with a plug, a, in order that it may resist the pressure to which it is subjected in fastening the scythe. The Scythe is fastened on the snath by means of a ring, h, the side of whose aperture under the heel of the scythe is attened and somewhat wider than said heel to give it play sidewise, for the purpose of turning the point vot the scythe out or in at pleasure. A shank having a screwthread cnt on it projects from theupper side of the ring J1., over which ts a washer, m,
striding the ring and resting upon the topfV of the snath. A nut, t', screws down upon said washer, and thereby draws the ring It up against theheel of the scythe and binds it rmly to the snath. The nebs B U are tightenedon the snath by a similar device-viz., by means of a ring and shank, b, Witha screwthread on the extremity of the shank, on which a nut,f, let into the wood d of the neb and turning with it, acts, and a washer, c, serving both-to hind the neb and as a ferrule to the wood.
Our improved device for adjusting the neb upon the snath consists otl a small longitndi nal rib, c, formed upon the snath where the nebs are placed, and titting into a series ot' notches cut on the inner periphery ot' the ring ofthe neb'. The aperture of the ring is s'utciently large to allow it to turn freely over salcl rib e when the nut f is unscrewed; and then the rib is inserted in any one of said notches, which will give the desired position to the nel), after which the nutfis screwed down firmly and holds the neb unchangeably in that position.
Our snath is applicable to grain-cradles as well as to scythes.
What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new manufacture, is
l. A scythe or cradle snnth composed ofa \vroughtinetal tube, which possesses the advantages ot' great durability and facility for being bent into any. desired form without increasing its ordinary weightor impairing its usual strength and iirmness.
The longitudinal rib e, or its equivalent, on the snath, in combination with a series of notches in the ring of the neb, for the purpose of adjusting the nebs securely upon the snath, substantially as herein set forth.
The above specification ot our improved Scythe-smith signed this 28th day ot' August, 1852.
