To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs WALLACE a citizen of the United States, residing in West New Brighton, in the borough oflticlnnond of the city ofNew York, have invented Hopper-Valves, &c., of which the following i s -'a specification, reference being nd to the accompanying drawing, forming a part Y hereof.
This invention relates to devices for controlling the how of coal, ore, grain, etc., from bins or other containers, to cars, trucks,
to devices of this charhaving in its bottoman opening through which the material may be deliveredjand jaws .or out olf devices for controlling such opening. \ln the operation of devices of-this in which, for example, two swinging jaws are moved toward a. median line to material, considerable resistance is offered to approach the median line; by reason or" the fact that the column of material above the edges of the. approaching ]21\\'S must be:
' movement but into which the material ma lifted sonu-what, as such devices are. ordiis the object of the present invention to so modify the construction as to provide within the valve body space which is not. filled by the material in its normal (low, but into which the material may be displaced by the closing menus without requiring the column of material above the same to c lifted and therefore making easier the movement of the closing means:
In accordance with the invention the valve body is extended at one or at each side beyond the margin of the opening through which the material flows into the body, whereby a space is left at, one or at each side for the purpose above described.
The. invention will he more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing in which it is illustrated as embodied in a valve of suitable construction, and in which-- Figure 1 is a view in vertical section of a valve which embodies the invention, and Fig. 2 is :1 view thereof in side elevation, 11 portionof the container being shown in section. t
In the dru'wingso much' of the container material handled toward the'mout orgoutlet from opposite directions stop the flow of especially as they p from the margin of the mouth b.
for the coal or other material as is necessary in; to enable the application ofthe invention tohe understood represented by walls 0,121,- which are shown as adopted to direct the;
I) through which the-mnterial escigpe st Bo .low such month -or opening is secured tl ie:
valve body which is provided in its bottoin] ,with an opening (1 controlled, inthecorig, struction shown, by-swingingjaws e1; latter are mounted to swing towardend froiii g each other and are adapted to mean-0M0, meet. substantially. in a-medinn line. suitable means may beprovided foriiopelf-uir ating the jaws e. in the drawing they are. opersted'by links; it and If from arms g and g" of a. three arnied lever, the third arm .g' 'of which is in turn connected by a link h. to-the, .ha nd lever i. 151 As shown clearly in Fig. l the body cgi's extended outwardl preferably at each side," as at c, beyond't e corres onding margin b of the mouth b and is pro erably provided, as at with a flange extended downwardly There is thus provided, at each side, a space 0', which not. tilled -by the material in its normal be pushed laterally and upwardly when it is than that offered when the material must be titted. i
It will be obvious that the forin of the valve body and the arrangement and con-- struction of the jaws and their operating means may be varied tosuit difierent reuirem'entsof use without departing from t to spirit of the invention.
The relation of the edges of the two jaws and the means for operating the jaws are not claimed herein, the same havin been. made respectively the subject of application 110 In the oonstructionsliownnjo. f-'
Ser. No. 421,656, filed March 17, 1908, and application Ser. No. 421,651, filed March 17, 1908.
I claim as my invention: 1. In a device of the class described, a container provided with a passage through whichthe material in the container may flow; a valve body located below said consaid valve, said valve body being enlarge -intermediate its ends to thereby provide a closed internal recess into which the materialfiowing through said valve body may enter as said valve -is closed.
2. In a device of the class container provided with a passage through which the material in the container may described, a.
flow; a valve body located below said container and having an inlet opening at its upper end communicating with said passage and an outlet opening atits lower end; a
' valve'located at the lower end of said valve body and adapted to move across said outlet opening transverse to the direction of flow of material therethroughv to thereby control the flow of material through said outlet opening; and means for operatin said valve, said valve body being enlarge adjacent its upper end and provided with V an internal flange depending from its top wall and forming a portion of;the periphery of said inlet openin whereby a closed internal recess is provi ed into which the material flowin through said valve body may enter as said valve is closed.
This specification signed and witnessed this 10th day of March A. D.,1908
