Be it known that I, GARRET BRADT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canajoharie, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutter- Bars for I-Iarvesters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to cutter bars for harvesters and the like, and one of the objects thereof is to provide means whereby the sections comprising the knife may be readily disconnected and detached from either end of the knife-bar.

Another object contemplated by the invention is the provision of novel locking means for the end sections of the knife.

To the accomplishment of the recited objects, and others coordinate therewith, the preferred embodiment of my invention resides in that arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and embraced within the scope of the appended claims.

In carrying' out my invention, I utilize a knife-bar 5 which isprovided with a longitudinally disposed, medially arranged L- shaped slot G, the said slot running throughv opposite ends of the bar. In this connection it will be observed that I form a bottom por tion 7 of the knife-bar slightly thicker than the upper portion 8 thereof, to serve as a reinforcement.

As previously stated, the knife comprises a plurality of sections 9, said sections having a lower substantially right angular por tion l0 which. is designed for engagement with the correspondingly shaped slot 6 in the knife-bar 5. All of the knife sections are identical in construction with the exception of those located at the outer terminals of the knife-bar which operate in a manner to be presently explained for the purpose of main- Specication of Letters atent.

taining intermediate sections in proper relative positions.

Adjacent each terminal and preferably on the thicker portion 7 of the knife-bar I provide a squared recess ll which affords a receptive space for the nut l2. rI`he base of the recess ll is so disposed with respect to the L-shaped slot 6 of the knife-bar that a slotted communication 13 is established, the same having registration with the similarly disposed recess la on the upper corner of the angularly defiected portion 10 of the end knives. In addition to the means just described for securing the knife sections to the knife-bar, I employ a bolt l5 which extends transversely through the entire organization and is held fast in an obvious manner by the nut l2.

With this construction of cutter bar the knife sections may be detached from the knife-bar at either terminal of the latter which feature 1s a marked advantage over cutter bars when provision 1s made for the removal of the knife sections at only one end4 of the bar. In furtherance of this principle the means for retaining the knife sections in proper relationship is positive and eliminates any possibility of the sections becoming loosened or otherwise disarranged as to impair the operation of the device.

It should be understood that in its broader aspect the invention comprehends the elnployment not only of the various means described, but of equivalent means for performing the recited functions.

Vhile the arrangement shown, is thought, at the present time, to be preferable, it is desired to reserve the right to eifect such modifications and variations as may come fairly within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is l. A. cutter bar comprising a knife-bar having an L shaped slot arranged the entire longitudinal extent thereof, a plurality of knife sections, each section having a short angular portion for engagement with said slot, and means extending transversely through said knife-bar at a point outwardly of the shorter angular portions of the outer end knife sections for locking all of said knife sections together.

A cutter bar comprising a knife-bar having a slot extending the entire longitudinal extent thereof, a plurality of knife sections, each section having an angular portion for engagement With said slot, the terminals of the knife-bar, and the end knife sections having registering openings, each of the angular portions of the end knife sections being provided with a recess, and means extending through said openings and engaging said recesses for locking all of the knife sections together.

3. A cutter bar comprising a knife-barhaving a slot extending the entire longitudinal extent thereof, a plurality of knife sections, each section having an angular portion for engagement With said slot, the terminals of the knife-bar and the end knife sections having registering openings, each of the angular portions of the end knife sections being provided With a recess, a bolt extending` through said openings, and a nut carried by said bolt and seated Within the opening of the knife-bar, said nutadapted to engage said recess for locking all of the knife sections together.
